Fruity Oat and Berry Crumble: A Recipe for the Whole Family

Snacks12+m 30 min 4 VeggieEasy
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Honey

This fruity oat and berry crumble makes a wonderful addition to the family table. Many children from 12 months enjoy the soft texture of the baked berries combined with the gentle crumble topping. It provides valuable fiber from the oats and natural vitamins from the fruit. Sharing this warm treat becomes a relaxed experience for the whole family.

Ingredients

For 2 to 3 portions, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 200 g mixed berries (for example fresh or frozen raspberries and blueberries)
  • 50 g rolled oats
  • 30 g softened butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey (or maple syrup)
  • 1 pinch of Ceylon cinnamon

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat).
  2. Wash the fresh berries, or place frozen berries directly into a small, greased baking dish.
  3. In a bowl, use your hands to knead the oats, softened butter, honey, and Ceylon cinnamon into a crumbly dough.
  4. Spread the oat mixture evenly over the berries.
  5. Bake the crumble in the oven for about 15 to 20 minutes, until the topping is lightly golden and the berries are bubbling.
  6. Let the dish cool down thoroughly and always check the temperature before feeding, as the fruit can get very hot inside.

Variations and Tips

  • Swap the fruit: Instead of berries, finely diced apples or pears work beautifully in this recipe.
  • Storage: Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 2 days when covered. You can also freeze the crumble in portions and gently reheat it when needed.
  • For the family: Parents can enhance their own portions with some roasted, chopped nuts or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Adjusting texture: For younger eaters, you can crumble the topping even finer and soften it with a little milk before serving.

Allergy and Safety Information

  • Allergens (EU14): This recipe contains milk (butter) and gluten (oats).
  • Honey: Please note that honey is only suitable for children from 12 months of age to prevent the risk of infant botulism. For younger children, you can replace it with a little unsweetened applesauce.
  • Nuts: If you adapt the recipe for adults by adding nuts, always offer nuts to toddlers finely ground or as a butter to prevent choking hazards.
  • Introducing new foods: It is best to introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts.
  • If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods or your child's diet, please speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

This crumble offers a lovely combination of complex carbohydrates and vitamins. The oats provide valuable iron and filling fiber. At the same time, the vitamin C from the berries supports iron absorption in the body, which is a great nutritional building block during the toddler years.
