Fruity Rusk Porridge with Strawberry and Banana
Starting solids is an exciting adventure for the whole family. This smooth rusk porridge is a wonderful afternoon snack for many children starting around five months. The combination of mild banana and fruity strawberries introduces a natural sweetness. It is a gentle way for your child to explore new flavors. The texture can be perfectly adjusted to your child's needs simply by letting it soak.
Ingredients
For about 2 to 3 portions, you will need:
- 2 to 3 pieces of unsweetened baby rusk
- 100 ml boiled, warm water
- 50 g fresh, mild strawberries (organic if possible)
- 0.5 ripe banana
- 1 tsp mild rapeseed oil (suitable for baby food)
Preparation
- Crumble the baby rusk into a small bowl.
- Pour the warm water over the rusk pieces and let them soak for about 5 minutes.
- Meanwhile, wash the strawberries thoroughly and remove the green tops. Peel the half banana.
- Puree the fruit together in a tall container using an immersion blender until a completely smooth, creamy texture is formed.
- Stir the fruit puree into the softened rusk and mix in the rapeseed oil.
- Always check the temperature before feeding to ensure the porridge is comfortably lukewarm.
Variations and Tips
- Fruity variety: You can easily swap the strawberries for smooth applesauce or pear puree.
- Milk option: The water can be replaced with breastmilk or prepared infant formula for a creamier texture.
- Storage: Since fresh banana browns quickly, it is best to prepare this porridge fresh. However, pure pureed strawberries freeze very well in ice cube trays.
- For parents: The leftover strawberries and the other half of the banana make a great addition to your own oatmeal or yogurt.
Allergy and Safety Information
This porridge contains gluten from the rusk. Introduce new ingredients like strawberries individually and in small amounts to observe any potential reactions. Milk remains the primary source of nutrition for your child at this stage. If you have any concerns about starting solids or potential food allergies, please consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
The rusk provides valuable carbohydrates for afternoon energy. Fresh strawberries offer plenty of Vitamin C. This vitamin helps the body absorb plant-based iron from other meals more effectively. At the same time, the banana supplies potassium and helps keep your child comfortably full.
