Gentle Apple, Raspberry and Quinoa Purée for Babies
A Gentle Start to Solids
This smooth apple, raspberry, and quinoa purée brings wonderful variety to the menu. Raspberries add a fruity note, perfectly balanced by the mild sweetness of the apple. Quinoa provides valuable nutrients and, when cooked thoroughly, offers a lovely texture. This recipe is a great choice for many children starting around five months of age.
Ingredients
- 1 sweet apple (approx. 150g, e.g., Gala)
- 50g raspberries (fresh or frozen)
- 20g quinoa
- 100ml water
- 1 tsp baby-safe oil (e.g., canola or rapeseed oil)
Preparation
- Rinse the quinoa thoroughly in a fine mesh sieve under hot water to remove any bitterness.
- Bring the quinoa and water to a boil in a small saucepan, then let it simmer gently for about 15 minutes.
- Meanwhile, peel, core, and dice the apple. Wash the raspberries carefully.
- Add the fruit to the quinoa in the pot and simmer everything together for another 5 minutes until soft.
- Blend the mixture very finely with an immersion blender until you reach a smooth, creamy consistency.
- Stir in the oil, let the purée cool down, and always test the temperature before feeding your child.
Variations & Tips
- Different fruit: The raspberries can easily be swapped out for blueberries or pieces of pear.
- Storage: The purée keeps well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
- Freezing: You can portion the purée into ice cube trays and freeze it for up to three months.
- Adjusting texture: For older children, simply mashing the cooked ingredients lightly with a fork is often enough.
- Family tip: Parents can use any leftover purée as a delicious, fruity topping for yogurt or oatmeal.
Allergy & Safety Information
Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts initially. This helps you observe how your child tolerates the new ingredients. Honey is strictly forbidden in the first year of life. Nuts or seeds must only be offered finely ground or as a smooth butter due to the risk of choking. If you have any concerns about introducing solids, please talk to your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
This dish is a wonderful source of nutrients for your child. Quinoa provides important plant-based iron and protein for growth. The vitamin C from the apple and raspberries helps the body absorb the iron from the quinoa optimally.
