Gentle Spelt Porridge with Pear and Plum for Starting Solids

Solids intro5+m 20 min 4 VeganEasy
Contains: Gluten

Introduction

The transition from milk feeds to the first spoonfuls is an exciting milestone. This gentle spelt porridge with pear and plum is a wonderful choice for the early stages of starting solids. The combination of mild fruit and fine cereal flakes appeals to many babies and naturally supports digestion. The recipe is incredibly easy to prepare and invites you to explore new flavors together in a relaxed way.

Ingredients

  • 100 g ripe pear (peeled and cored)
  • 50 g fresh plums (peeled and pitted)
  • 100 ml water (for the fruit)
  • 20 g fine spelt flakes (baby-grade spelt cereal is ideal)
  • 100 ml water or infant formula (for the porridge)
  • 1 tsp high-quality canola oil (baby-safe oil)

Preparation

  1. Cut the pear and plums into small, fine cubes.
  2. Place the fruit and the 100 ml of water into a small pot and bring to a gentle boil.
  3. Simmer over medium heat for about 10 minutes until the fruit pieces are very soft.
  4. Puree the cooked fruit with an immersion blender until you have a smooth, completely lump-free sauce.
  5. In a second pot, briefly bring the spelt flakes and 100 ml of water or formula to a boil, stirring constantly until it thickens for about 2 to 3 minutes.
  6. Stir the fruit puree and the canola oil into the spelt porridge until a smooth, creamy texture forms.
  7. Let the porridge cool to room temperature and always test the temperature before feeding your child.

Variations & Tips

  • Switch up the fruit: A mild apple makes a wonderful substitute for the plum and pairs beautifully with pear.
  • Step-by-step introduction: When offering this porridge for the first time, you might introduce just the pear first and add the plum a few days later. This makes it easy to observe how your child tolerates the new ingredients.
  • Storage: The prepared porridge keeps well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. The pure fruit puree can easily be frozen in ice cube trays and thawed as needed.
  • Adjusting the texture: For the very first tastes, you can mix in a little extra water or breastmilk to make the porridge even more liquid.
  • For parents: Add a pinch of cinnamon and some chopped walnuts to any leftover porridge for a delicious adult breakfast.

Allergy & Safety

  • This recipe contains spelt (gluten). Always introduce new ingredients like spelt one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
  • Please avoid honey entirely during the first year of life, as it can contain dangerous bacteria.
  • Nuts or seeds must only be offered as a smooth butter or finely ground to prevent choking hazards.
  • If you have any uncertainties about introducing solids or questions regarding allergies, it is always best to consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Value

Spelt flakes provide valuable carbohydrates and iron, which are important for growth during this phase. The vitamin C from the pear and plum helps the body optimally absorb the plant-based iron from the cereal. Additionally, the fruits offer gentle dietary fibers that promote comfortable digestion.
