Introduction

This classic dish is highly popular with many families and brings a wonderful sense of comfort to the dinner table. For children aged three and older, the combination of carbohydrates and cheese provides plenty of energy for active afternoons. The fresh green salad complements the meal beautifully with valuable vitamins. Sitting together at the table and sharing a warm meal also strengthens the family bond. Children often love the creamy texture, while parents appreciate the straightforward preparation.

Ingredients

  • 300 g spaetzle (store-bought or homemade)
  • 100 g grated cheese (mild, such as Emmental or Gouda)
  • 1 large onion
  • 2 tbsp butter or neutral vegetable oil
  • 50 ml milk or cream
  • 1 pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 pinch of black pepper
  • 1 small head of lettuce (such as butterhead lettuce)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tbsp mild apple cider vinegar
  • 1 pinch of herbs (parsley or chives)

Preparation

  1. Peel the onion and cut it into fine rings. Roast in a pan with one tablespoon of butter over medium heat for about ten minutes until soft and aromatic.
  2. Cook the spaetzle in boiling water according to the package instructions or place them directly into a large pan. Add another tablespoon of butter and lightly fry the spaetzle.
  3. Pour the milk or cream over the spaetzle and fold in the grated cheese. Stir everything over low heat until a smooth and creamy texture forms. Ensure that the cheese is completely melted.
  4. Season mildly with a small pinch of nutmeg and pepper. Distribute the roasted onions over the finished cheese spaetzle.
  5. Wash the lettuce, tear it into bite-sized pieces, and mix a mild dressing using the olive oil, apple cider vinegar, and herbs.
  6. Let the dish cool down briefly before serving. Always check the temperature before your child takes the first bite.

Variations and Tips

  • Hidden vegetables: Mix small broccoli florets or peas into the spaetzle to make the meal even more colorful.
  • Storage: Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to two days when covered. Freezing cheese spaetzle is possible, though the texture might become slightly dry after thawing.
  • Adjusting texture: For younger siblings, you can omit the onions or puree them very finely.
  • Tip for parents: Adults can season their portion more robustly at the table with a little more pepper or a pinch of salt.

Allergy and Safety Information

  • This recipe contains gluten (spaetzle) and dairy products (cheese, butter, milk). Always introduce new ingredients individually and in small amounts.
  • Ensure that the lettuce is torn into easily chewable pieces.
  • If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or your child's diet, it is best to speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Value

The spaetzle provide important carbohydrates, which serve as a quick energy source for everyday activities. The cheese brings valuable calcium, supporting bone development. At the same time, the fresh lettuce delivers important dietary fiber and vitamins for a balanced meal. At this age, children grow steadily and explore their world with a strong urge to move. Therefore, energy-rich and nutrient-dense meals are particularly valuable.
