Hearty Ground Beef and Potato Casserole for the Family

Family meals2+y 45 min 4Medium
Contains: Dairy

This hearty casserole combines creamy mashed potatoes with savory ground beef and a crispy cheese crust. For children aged three and older, this dish provides plenty of energy for active days while supplying valuable protein for growth. It is a wonderful family meal that warms you from the inside on chilly days and often leaves plates completely empty. The soft texture makes it pleasant for little eaters, while the golden cheese layer brings excitement to the family table.

Ingredients

For 2 to 3 servings, you will need:

  • 400 g waxy potatoes (organic preferred)
  • 250 g fresh ground beef
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 carrot
  • 50 ml whole milk
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 50 g grated cheese (such as mild gouda or cheddar)
  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 pinch of sweet paprika
  • A little fresh parsley (finely chopped)

Preparation

  1. Peel the potatoes, cut them into small cubes, and boil them in a pot of water for about 15 minutes until soft.
  2. Meanwhile, peel the onion and carrot, then finely dice them.
  3. Heat the canola oil in a pan and brown the ground beef along with the diced onion and carrot for about 8 to 10 minutes until crumbly.
  4. Mildly season the beef mixture with a pinch of salt, sweet paprika, and the fresh parsley.
  5. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (conventional heat).
  6. Drain the water from the potatoes, add the milk and butter, and mash everything until a smooth, creamy puree forms.
  7. Place the ground beef mixture into a small baking dish and spread the mashed potatoes evenly on top.
  8. Sprinkle the grated cheese over the potatoes and bake the casserole in the oven for about 15 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Let the casserole cool down well and always test the temperature before your child takes the first bite.

Variations & Tips

  • Hide the veggies: You can easily mix finely grated zucchini, parsnip, or celery into the ground beef mixture.
  • Storage: The covered casserole will keep in the fridge for about two days. It also freezes wonderfully in portions and can be reheated in the oven when needed.
  • Adjusting texture: For younger siblings, the beef mixture can be lightly pureed before layering to make chewing easier.
  • For the whole family: If adults prefer a bit more kick, you can season your own plate with black pepper, chili flakes, or garlic oil.
  • Cooking together: Children aged three and up often love to help mash the potatoes or sprinkle the cheese on top.

Allergy & Safety Information

  • This recipe contains dairy products (milk, butter, cheese), which are common allergens.
  • Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
  • Make sure the ground beef is always cooked through completely (at least 70 degrees Celsius in the center) to eliminate any potential pathogens.
  • If you plan to use nuts in any variations, remember the choking hazard: nuts must only be offered finely ground to young children.
  • If you have any concerns about introducing solid foods or your child's diet, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Value

The ground beef is an excellent source of easily absorbable iron, which plays a role in blood formation and cognitive development. The potatoes provide filling carbohydrates, while the milk and cheese supply important calcium for the bones. By adding carrots, the dish also offers vitamin A, which supports vision during this active phase of growth.
