Homemade Chocolate Nut Oat Bars

Snacks2+y 60 min 4 VeggieEasy
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Tree nuts, Sugar

Introduction

Hearty bars made from oats, mixed nuts, and dark chocolate chips offer a wonderful, long-lasting energy boost [2]. Especially for the afternoon slump or before running around the playground, this snack is ideal for children aged three and older. The combination of complex carbohydrates and healthy fats provides fresh strength for little explorers.

Ingredients

For about 6 small bars (yields 2 to 3 snack portions):

  • 100 g rolled oats (organic preferred)
  • 50 g mixed nuts (very finely ground)
  • 30 g dark chocolate (finely chopped)
  • 50 g soft butter (or mild coconut oil)
  • 30 g unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup
  • 1 small pinch of cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 175 degrees Celsius (conventional heat). Line a small baking sheet or baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the soft butter, applesauce, and maple syrup well in a bowl.
  3. Add the oats, ground nuts, chocolate chips, and cinnamon. Stir everything thoroughly until a slightly sticky, cohesive mixture forms.
  4. Press the mixture firmly into the prepared dish. The layer can be about one to two centimeters thick.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes until the edges are lightly golden brown.
  6. Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool completely. Always check the temperature before serving and cut the mixture into small, easy-to-hold bars.

Variations & Tips

  • Fruity twist: Swap the chocolate chips for unsulfured, finely chopped raisins or cranberries.
  • Storage: Stored in an airtight container in the fridge, the bars will keep for about three to four days. They also freeze wonderfully and can be thawed individually as needed.
  • For the whole family: Adults can enhance the bars with a pinch of sea salt or a few coarse pumpkin seeds.
  • Adjusting texture: For children who prefer a softer bite, use a little more applesauce and shorten the baking time slightly.

Allergy & Safety Notes

This recipe contains gluten (oats), dairy (butter), and tree nuts. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to carefully observe any potential reactions. Whole nuts pose a choking hazard for young children [1]. Therefore, always use nuts that are very finely ground. If you have any uncertainties about introducing foods or your child's diet, it is best to consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Oats provide valuable fiber and complex carbohydrates for long-lasting fullness. The nuts contribute healthy fats and important minerals like magnesium, which active children aged three and older can put to good use in their daily lives. Dark chocolate in small amounts adds a lovely flavor and also contains valuable antioxidants.
