Homemade Christmas Market Mushroom Pan with Mild Garlic Sauce

Seasonal2+y 28 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Dairy

You can easily recreate this winter classic from the festive markets in a child-friendly way at home. The roasted mushrooms with a mild yogurt garlic sauce make for a warming, uncomplicated dinner on cold days. At the same time, the dish provides valuable fiber and B vitamins, which wonderfully support your child as they grow.

Ingredients

For 2 to 3 portions you will need:

  • 500 g fresh button mushrooms (brown or white, organic if possible)
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 clove of garlic (for the pan)
  • 2 tbsp mild vegetable oil (e.g., canola oil)
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika powder
  • 1 tiny pinch of salt and pepper
  • 150 g plain yogurt (whole milk)
  • 1 small clove of garlic (for the sauce, or use garlic powder)
  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, finely chopped

Preparation

  1. Clean the mushrooms and halve or quarter them, depending on their size.
  2. Peel the onion and one clove of garlic, then chop them into very fine cubes.
  3. Heat the oil in a large pan and sauté the diced onion and garlic over medium heat until translucent.
  4. Add the mushrooms and fry them well for about 10 minutes, until they turn golden brown and the liquid has evaporated.
  5. Season with paprika powder, a tiny pinch of salt, and pepper, then remove the pan from the heat.
  6. For the sauce, stir the plain yogurt together with the second, very finely pressed garlic clove and the parsley until a smooth, creamy texture is formed.
  7. Let the dish cool down well before serving, and always do a temperature test before your child takes a bite.

Variations and Tips

  • Add more veggies: Mix finely diced zucchini or bell pepper pieces in with the mushrooms to bring even more color to the plate.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. Freezing is not recommended for this dish, as mushrooms often become mushy when thawed.
  • For the whole family: Adults can spice up their portion at the table with a little more salt, pepper, or chili flakes.
  • Adjusting texture: For younger children or those who are still getting used to the texture of mushrooms, you can cut them into very small, bite-sized pieces.

Allergy and Safety Information

  • Allergens: This recipe contains dairy (yogurt).
  • Introducing new foods: Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts so you can easily spot any reactions.
  • Safety: Honey is strictly forbidden under 12 months of age, and whole nuts pose a choking hazard so they must only be offered finely ground (neither are in this recipe, but important everyday rules).
  • Medical advice: If you have any uncertainties regarding diet, allergies, or introducing new foods, always speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Thanks to the mushrooms, this dish provides valuable B vitamins and essential minerals like potassium. The plain yogurt also adds calcium and proteins, which are highly beneficial for the growth of bones and muscles at this age. At the same time, the fiber in the mushrooms is pleasantly filling without overloading a little tummy.
