Homemade New Year's Eve Berliners with Strawberry Jam for Kids

Seasonal2+y 100 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Egg, Sugar

Introduction

Making homemade Berliners to ring in the new year is a wonderful experience for the whole family and brings a festive atmosphere to your kitchen. The soft, fluffy yeast dough is easy for toddlers to chew, while the fruity filling often brings a bright smile to your child's face at the dining table. Especially on special days like New Year's Eve or Carnival, it is lovely when everyone can enjoy a child-friendly treat together. This recipe skips the traditional deep-frying in hot oil and instead relies on gentle baking in the oven. This allows you to bake comfortably and cultivate a sweet tradition together.

Ingredients

  • 250 g all-purpose flour (or light spelt flour, organic if possible)
  • 100 ml lukewarm milk (cow's milk or a plant-based alternative)
  • 20 g fresh yeast (or 1 packet active dry yeast)
  • 30 g soft butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp fine sugar
  • 1 pinch of vanilla
  • 3 tbsp mild strawberry jam (smooth, without chunks)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting
  • (Makes about 6 small Berliners, suitable for 2 to 3 portions)

Preparation

  1. Pour the lukewarm milk into a large mixing bowl and completely dissolve the fresh yeast and fine sugar in it.
  2. Add the flour, soft butter, egg, and a pinch of vanilla to the yeast and milk mixture.
  3. Knead everything using the dough hooks of a hand mixer or stand mixer for about 5 to 7 minutes until a smooth, supple dough forms and pulls away from the sides of the bowl.
  4. Cover the dough with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes, until it has noticeably increased in volume.
  5. Divide the dough into about six equal pieces on a lightly floured surface, shape them into round balls, and let them rise for another 20 minutes on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Bake the Berliners in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat) for about 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown, which is a wonderful, low-fat alternative to traditional deep-frying.
  7. After baking, let the dough balls cool slightly and carefully pipe the strawberry jam into the center from the side using a pastry bag.
  8. Allow the finished Berliners to cool completely and always check the temperature of the filling before serving, as the inside often stays hot for longer.

Variations & Tips

  • Instead of strawberry jam, mild applesauce, apricot jam, or unsweetened plum butter makes an excellent filling for little gourmets.
  • For parents and older siblings, the fully baked Berliners can be tossed in a classic cinnamon-sugar mixture or decorated with icing after cooling.
  • The baked Berliners stay fresh and soft for about two days when stored in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • They also freeze exceptionally well for later use. When needed, simply thaw the Berliners at room temperature and briefly reheat them in a warm oven.
  • If your child prefers a softer texture, you can cut the Berliners into small, bite-sized pieces before serving.

Allergy & Safety Information

  • This recipe contains wheat (gluten), egg, and milk, which are among the most common allergens.
  • Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts so you can easily monitor your child for any potential allergic reactions.
  • Always ensure that your child sits upright at the table and eats in a calm environment to prevent choking.
  • Whole nuts or hard pieces have no place in this recipe to ensure safety for young children.
  • If you have any concerns about your child's diet, meal plans, or family history of allergies, it is always best to consult your pediatrician directly.

Nutritional Information

The fluffy yeast dough provides valuable proteins and calcium from the egg and milk, which are important for growth in the toddler years. The carbohydrates from the wheat flour offer quick energy for active afternoons and extensive play. Combined with a fruity filling, this creates a balanced treat that wonderfully complements the menu during festive moments. By baking them in the oven, you also save a large amount of fat, making the pastry particularly easy to digest.
