Snacks2+y 20 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Egg

Introduction

These fruity apple rings in soft pancake batter make a wonderful snack for little explorers aged three and up. They are easy to grasp with small hands, taste delicious warm or cold, and provide valuable energy for active days. Parents love this recipe because it turns fresh fruit into a delightfully sweet and child-friendly treat without any added sugar.

Ingredients

  • 2 large apples (organic if possible, sweet variety like Gala)
  • 100 g spelt flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 100 ml milk (whole milk or oat drink)
  • 1 egg (medium size)
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon preferred)
  • 1 pinch vanilla powder
  • 2 tbsp canola or coconut oil for frying

Preparation

  1. Wash and peel the apples, then remove the core using an apple corer.
  2. Cut the prepared apples into rings about one centimeter thick.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, milk, egg, cinnamon, and vanilla powder until a smooth, creamy batter forms.
  4. Heat the oil in a non-stick pan over medium heat.
  5. Using a fork, dip each apple ring into the pancake batter until it is completely coated.
  6. Place the rings in the pan and fry on both sides for three to four minutes each until golden brown.
  7. Drain the finished apple rings on a paper towel and let them cool down well before serving. Please test the temperature before your child takes a bite.

Variations & Tips

  • Fruity alternatives: Firm pears also work beautifully in this recipe instead of apples.
  • Storage: The fried rings will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. They can also be frozen and easily reheated in the toaster.
  • For the whole family: Adults often enjoy a dusting of powdered sugar or some toasted almond flakes on top of the warm rings.
  • Texture adjustments: For younger siblings, you can steam the apple rings briefly before dipping them in batter to make them even softer.

Allergy & Safety Notes

This recipe contains egg, gluten, and dairy, which are recognized allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. Nuts and seeds pose a choking hazard for young children and must only be used finely ground. If you choose to use honey as a sweetener for older family members, remember that it is unsafe for babies under twelve months due to the risk of infant botulism. If you have any concerns about introducing new foods or potential allergies, please speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Info

The apples provide important dietary fiber for balanced digestion and natural vitamin C. The egg and milk contribute high-quality protein and calcium, which are valuable for bone growth at this active age. By avoiding added sugar, children benefit from the pure sweetness of the fruit, supporting healthy taste development.
