A Delicious Meal for Little Explorers

These juicy oven-baked mini omelets are a wonderful meal for toddlers from 12 months onward. They provide valuable protein for growth and are exceptionally easy for little hands to hold. The soft texture makes chewing effortless, which encourages many children to enjoy eating independently.

Ingredients

  • 4 eggs (medium, preferably organic)
  • 50 ml whole milk
  • 1 small tomato (approx. 80 g)
  • 1 tsp canola oil (for greasing the muffin tin)
  • 1 pinch of mild herbs (like finely chopped parsley or chives)
  • A tiny pinch of salt (optional, use very sparingly for toddlers)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit). Lightly grease a muffin tin with the canola oil.
  2. Wash the tomato, score an X on the bottom, and briefly blanch it in hot water. Peel off the skin, remove the core, and cut the flesh into very fine cubes.
  3. In a bowl, whisk the eggs and milk together until you have a smooth mixture. Gently fold in the tomato cubes and mild herbs.
  4. Distribute the egg mixture evenly among the prepared muffin cups (makes about 2 to 3 toddler portions).
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, until the omelets are set and lightly golden.
  6. Remove the mini omelets from the oven and let them cool down completely before serving. Always test the temperature before your child takes the first bite.

Variations & Tips

  • Vegetable swap: Feel free to replace the tomatoes with finely grated zucchini or tiny bell pepper cubes.
  • Storage: The omelets will keep in the fridge for about two days in an airtight container. They also freeze beautifully and can be thawed individually as needed.
  • Family meal: For older family members, you can season the baked omelets with black pepper, a bit more salt, or fresh chili flakes at the table.
  • Adjusting texture: If your child is still practicing their grip, you can cut the omelets into long strips to make them easier to hold.

Allergy & Safety Information

This recipe contains eggs and dairy (cow's milk), which are common allergens. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any reactions. While not used here, remember that honey is unsafe for children under 12 months due to the risk of infant botulism. Whole nuts pose a choking hazard and must only be offered finely ground or as a smooth butter. If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutrition Note

Eggs are an excellent source of high-quality protein and essential B vitamins. The tomatoes add a great boost of vitamin C, which helps the body absorb iron from other plant-based foods. This combination of nutrients is fantastic for a toddler's active developmental phase.
