Little Apple Cinnamon Swirls: A Fragrant Treat for Little Hands

Introduction

These delightful little apple cinnamon swirls make a wonderful snack for children aged three years and older. They are soft, easy to hold, and taste wonderfully of apple and cinnamon. Baking them together can also playfully encourage fine motor skills and understanding of processes.

These sweet swirls provide your child with natural energy from fruits and grains. They are a lovely way to incorporate fruit into their diet and offer an alternative to commercially produced snacks. The aroma alone creates a cozy atmosphere.

Ingredients for 2-3 Servings

  • 1 roll fresh puff pastry (from the refrigerated section, approx. 275 g or 9.7 oz)
  • 2 medium apples (e.g., Gala or Fuji), preferably organic
  • 1 teaspoon butter (approx. 5 g or 0.18 oz)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon cane sugar (optional, for children 3 years and older in small amounts)
  • 1 small egg (for brushing)

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F) top/bottom heat and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Peel, core, and finely dice the apples.
  3. Melt the butter in a small pan. Sauté the apple cubes for about 5-7 minutes until they are soft and slightly translucent.
  4. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the cinnamon and optionally the cane sugar into the apple mixture. Let the filling cool down slightly.
  5. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface. Spread the cooled apple-cinnamon filling evenly over it, leaving a small border free.
  6. Carefully and firmly roll up the puff pastry from the longer side.
  7. Using a sharp knife, cut the roll into slices approximately 1.5 to 2 cm (about 0.6 to 0.8 inches) thick.
  8. Place the swirls with some space between them on the prepared baking sheet. Whisk the egg and brush it over the swirls.
  9. Bake the apple cinnamon swirls for about 12-15 minutes in the preheated oven, until golden brown and puffed up.
  10. Let the swirls cool down completely before serving. Always check the temperature before your child eats them.

Variations & Tips

  • Fruity Variety: Instead of apples, you can use diced pears or a mixture of berries (fresh or thawed). Ensure berries are well mashed or finely chopped.
  • Storage: The apple cinnamon swirls taste best fresh. However, you can store any leftovers well-sealed in the refrigerator for 2-3 days.
  • Freezing: The baked swirls freeze well. Wrapped individually in freezer bags, they will keep for about 2-3 months. Simply thaw and briefly reheat when needed.
  • For the Whole Family: For older children and adults, you can add a bit more sugar to the filling or prepare a glaze made from powdered sugar and lemon juice.
  • Adjusting Texture: For younger children who are still developing their chewing skills, you can further mash or puree the apple cubes after cooking.

Allergy & Safety Notes

This recipe contains wheat (in puff pastry), milk (in puff pastry, may contain traces), and egg (for brushing). Please be aware of these potential allergens. Always introduce new foods individually and in small amounts to observe any possible reactions. If you have any concerns about your child's nutrition, please speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

These small apple cinnamon swirls provide your child with valuable carbohydrates, serving as an energy source for the day. The apples contribute fiber for digestion and contain important vitamins. Together with the nutrients from the grains in the puff pastry, they offer a balanced and satisfying snack.
