Mild Broccoli and Potato Patties for Babies
Introduction
Starting solids is an exciting time for the whole family. These mild broccoli and potato patties are wonderfully soft and make a great addition to this special phase. They combine gentle vegetables that many children accept quite easily.
The tender texture makes it simple to adapt the dish. You can blend the ingredients into a very fine puree for those first little spoonfuls. Later on, you can form small patties that serve as very soft finger food.
Ingredients
- 100 g broccoli (organic if possible)
- 100 g potatoes (floury or all-purpose)
- 1 tbsp rapeseed oil (or mild olive oil)
- A little water for steaming
Preparation
- Peel the potatoes thoroughly, wash them, and cut them into small cubes.
- Wash the broccoli under running water and separate it into very small florets.
- Steam the potatoes and broccoli in a pot with a little water for about 15 minutes until very tender.
- Drain any remaining water and mash the vegetables together with the oil until you reach a very fine, smooth consistency.
- Form small, flat patties from the soft mixture and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Bake gently in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 10 to 15 minutes.
- Let the patties cool completely and always check the temperature before feeding.
Variations & Tips
- Swap the vegetables: The broccoli can easily be replaced with mild carrots, zucchini, or parsnips.
- Storage: The finished patties keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. They are also highly freezable.
- Texture for beginners: For the very first purees, simply skip the baking step. Blend the cooked vegetables with the oil and a little water to create a completely smooth puree.
- Tip for parents: For the adults, you can season the remaining mixture with fresh herbs, a pinch of salt, and a little grated cheese before baking.
Allergy & Safety Information
Always introduce new ingredients like broccoli one at a time and in small amounts. This allows you to calmly observe how your child handles the new food. This basic version of the recipe is free from the 14 major allergens.
Always ensure that the meal is at a comfortable, lukewarm temperature. If you have any questions or concerns about starting solids, it is always a good idea to consult your pediatrician.
