Mild Cream Cheese and Chive Spread on Soft Bread

Snacks5+m 5 min 4 VeggieEasy
Contains: Gluten, Dairy

A spreadable snack with pasteurized cream cheese and a touch of chives brings gentle new flavors to the menu. Served on soft, crustless bread, this recipe is a wonderful way to introduce your child to mild herbs. Many children enjoy the creamy texture that easily melts in the mouth.

During the transition to solid foods, exploring new taste nuances is always an exciting adventure. Mild herbs like chives are excellent for gently awakening the sense of taste. This simple dish can be wonderfully integrated into your daily routine.

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons pasteurized cream cheese (plain, full-fat, organic if possible)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh chives (very finely chopped or pureed into a paste)
  • 1 small slice of soft bread (crusts removed, such as a fine spelt bread)
  • Optional: 1 to 2 teaspoons breastmilk or formula (for an even softer consistency)

Instructions

  1. Wash the chives thoroughly and chop them extremely finely until almost no pieces remain.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the cream cheese well with the chives.
  3. If needed, stir in a little breastmilk or formula until a very smooth, creamy consistency is reached.
  4. Remove the crust from the bread and spread the mixture thinly on top.
  5. Always check the temperature before feeding if the bread was slightly warmed.

Variations & Tips

  • For a fruity alternative, mix a teaspoon of mild, unsweetened applesauce into the cream cheese instead of chives.
  • You can store the plain spread in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two days. Freezing is not recommended, as cream cheese often becomes watery.
  • To adapt the texture for early eaters, soak the soft bread in a little milk and mash it together with the spread into a fine, smooth puree.
  • For the rest of the family, the spread can easily be enhanced with a pinch of salt, pepper, and a little garlic.

Allergy & Safety Information

  • This recipe contains gluten (bread) and cow's milk protein (cream cheese), which are recognized allergens.
  • Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
  • Honey is strictly forbidden for babies under 12 months due to the risk of infant botulism.
  • Nuts and seeds may only be offered finely ground or as a smooth butter due to choking hazards.
  • If you have any concerns about introducing solid foods or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

This dish provides valuable calcium from the cream cheese, which supports bone development. The soft bread offers gentle carbohydrates for energy, while the chives introduce early traces of vitamin C. This combination creates a nourishing base for little ones exploring new tastes.
