Mild Ham and Pea Pasta for Toddlers

Toddler meals12+m 25 min 4Medium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy

This traditional pasta dish, prepared in a toddler-friendly and low-salt way, is ideal for little explorers joining the family table. Around their first birthday, many children are ready to try and discover almost everything adults eat. The small square noodles and soft peas are perfect for practicing self-feeding with a spoon or fingers. At the same time, the combination of mild cooked ham and vegetables provides valuable energy for an active day.

Ingredients (for 2 to 3 portions)

  • 150 g small square pasta (or small macaroni)
  • 80 g mild cooked ham (organic quality recommended)
  • 100 g frozen peas (extra fine)
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 tbsp canola oil or mild butter
  • 100 g sour cream
  • 50 ml whole milk
  • A little fresh parsley (finely chopped)
  • A pinch of sweet paprika (salt to taste for parents)

Preparation

  1. Cook the pasta according to the package instructions in unsalted or very lightly salted water. About 3 minutes before the end of the cooking time, add the frozen peas directly to the pasta water and cook them together.
  2. Meanwhile, peel the onion and dice it very finely. Cut the cooked ham into small, bite-sized pieces as well.
  3. Heat the canola oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the diced onions until translucent, then add the ham and fry briefly.
  4. Stir the sour cream and milk into the pan until a smooth, creamy sauce forms. Bring the sauce to a quick boil and let it simmer gently on low heat for about 2 minutes.
  5. Drain the pasta and peas, then add them directly to the sauce in the pan. Mix everything well and refine with paprika and freshly chopped parsley.
  6. Let the dish cool down thoroughly before serving. Always test the temperature yourself before your child takes the first bite.

Variations & Tips

  • Switching up the veggies: Instead of peas, small carrot cubes or grated zucchini also fit perfectly into this mild sauce. Diverse colors and flavors spark curiosity and encourage discovery.
  • For the whole family: Set aside the portion for your child before seasoning the rest of the family meal with salt, pepper, or other spices for yourselves.
  • Adjusting the texture: For children who are just starting with family meals, you can cook the pasta a little softer and dice the ham extra finely.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be kept covered in the refrigerator for up to two days. The dish can also be frozen, although the pasta will become a bit softer after thawing.

Allergy & Safety Information

  • This recipe contains gluten (pasta) and dairy (sour cream, milk). Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
  • Please note that nuts and seeds are only safe for toddlers when finely ground, as they otherwise pose a choking hazard.
  • Honey is safe after the first birthday, though it is not included in this savory recipe.
  • If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods or transitioning to family meals, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

This dish offers a balanced mix of carbohydrates for long-lasting energy and proteins from the ham and dairy products. The peas provide valuable fiber for healthy digestion and plant-based iron. Fresh parsley also contributes Vitamin C, which optimally supports iron absorption in the body.
