Mild Kale and Potato Mash for Toddlers

Seasonal12+m 30 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Dairy

This warming winter dish is perfect for shared meals at the family table. The gently cooked kale and soft potatoes provide essential vitamins for the colder months. It is a wonderful way for your child to experience the mild flavor of regional winter vegetables.

Ingredients

  • 300 g potatoes (all-purpose, preferably organic)
  • 150 g fresh kale (tough stems removed)
  • 100 ml mild, low-sodium vegetable broth
  • 50 ml whole milk (3.5% fat)
  • 1 tbsp canola oil or a small piece of butter
  • A pinch of nutmeg

Preparation

  1. Peel, wash, and cut the potatoes into rough cubes.
  2. Wash the kale thoroughly, remove the tough stems, and chop the leaves very finely.
  3. Boil the potato cubes in a pot with a little water for about 15 minutes until soft.
  4. In a second pot, heat the vegetable broth and gently simmer the finely chopped kale for about 10 minutes.
  5. Drain the water from the potatoes and add the milk along with the canola oil or butter.
  6. Mash the potatoes with a potato masher until a smooth, creamy consistency is reached.
  7. Fold the soft kale and any remaining broth into the mashed potatoes, then refine with a pinch of nutmeg.
  8. Let the mash cool down well before serving and always check the temperature.

Variations and Tips

You can easily swap the kale for fresh spinach. Spinach only needs about 3 minutes to cook in the broth. Parents can easily season their own portions at the table with salt, pepper, and roasted onions. The mash keeps well in the fridge in an airtight container for up to two days. You can also freeze the dish without any issues and reheat it in small portions when needed.

Allergy and Safety Notes

This recipe contains milk, a common allergen. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts. Make sure the kale is cooked until very soft to make chewing easier for your child. Although honey is allowed after the first birthday, it is generally not needed in savory family meals. If you have any concerns about introducing new foods or family meals, always consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Kale is a fantastic regional winter vegetable that provides plenty of plant-based iron and vitamin C. The potatoes offer long-lasting energy through complex carbohydrates. This combination of nutrients beautifully supports your child's immune system during the cold season.
