Kohlrabi has a mild and slightly sweet flavor that many children truly enjoy. Paired with a creamy mashed potato base, it creates a wonderfully comforting lunch for the whole family. This meal provides great energy for the day and makes eating together at the family table a lovely experience.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium kohlrabi (approx. 300 g)
  • 400 g floury potatoes
  • 1 egg (for breading)
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 4 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp rapeseed oil
  • 50 ml whole milk
  • 1 tsp butter
  • 1 pinch nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt (use sparingly for adults)

Preparation

  1. Peel the potatoes, cut them into small cubes, and boil them in a little water for about 15 minutes until very soft.
  2. Peel the kohlrabi, cut it into slices about one centimeter thick, and simmer in boiling water for eight to ten minutes until tender.
  3. Drain the soft kohlrabi slices and coat them sequentially in flour, the beaten egg, and finally the breadcrumbs.
  4. Heat the rapeseed oil in a pan and gently fry the breaded slices over medium heat until golden brown on both sides.
  5. Drain the potatoes, add the milk and butter, and mash everything together until a smooth consistency is reached.
  6. Season the mash with a tiny pinch of nutmeg, let the entire dish cool down, and always check the temperature before serving.

Variations and Tips

  • Vegetable swap: Thick slices of zucchini or softly steamed celeriac work wonderfully as an alternative to kohlrabi.
  • Storage: The mashed potatoes keep well in the fridge for up to two days when stored in an airtight container. The schnitzels are best enjoyed fresh.
  • Texture tweak: To adapt the texture for younger eaters, simply skip the breading and serve the softly steamed kohlrabi plain alongside the mash.
  • For parents: Adults can easily season their own portions right on the plate with a bit more salt, pepper, and fresh herbs.

Allergy and Safety Information

  • This recipe contains the EU14 allergens egg, gluten (from flour and breadcrumbs), and milk.
  • Introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any reactions.
  • If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or transitioning to family meals, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Kohlrabi provides plenty of Vitamin C and valuable fiber to support healthy digestion. The potatoes offer long-lasting energy from carbohydrates for active afternoons. Rapeseed oil adds important fatty acids that are highly beneficial for healthy child development.
