This mild pearl barley stew is a wonderful, warming family meal for little explorers from 12 months of age. The softly cooked pearl barley and fine root vegetables are easy to spoon and chew. The dish replenishes energy reserves and provides valuable nutrients for an active day at the family table.
Ingredients
- 50 g pearl barley (fine or medium)
- 150 g carrots (organic preferred)
- 50 g celeriac (celery root)
- 50 g leek (only the mild white and light green parts)
- 1 tbsp canola oil or mild butter
- 500 ml mild vegetable broth (low sodium)
- 1 pinch of mild black pepper (optional)
- 1 tbsp freshly chopped parsley
Makes about 2 to 3 toddler portions.
Preparation
- Wash the vegetables thoroughly, peel them, and cut the carrots, celeriac, and leek into very fine dice.
- Heat the canola oil in a pot over medium heat and gently sauté the vegetables for about three minutes.
- Rinse the pearl barley briefly under cold running water, add it to the vegetables in the pot, and sauté briefly.
- Pour in the mild vegetable broth and bring everything to a gentle boil.
- Let the stew simmer gently over low heat with the lid closed for about 30 to 35 minutes, until the barley is soft and creamy.
- Remove the pot from the heat, stir in the fresh parsley, and let the stew cool down a bit.
- Always check the temperature before feeding to ensure your child does not burn their mouth.
Variations and Tips
- Adapt the vegetables: You can easily replace the celeriac with parsnip or sweet potato. This gives the stew a slightly sweeter note that many children enjoy.
- For the whole family: Adults can simply season their portion at the table with a little salt, pepper, and extra fresh herbs.
- Smart storage: The stew keeps well in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days. It also freezes beautifully in small portions for easy reheating later.
- Adjusting the texture: If your child still needs a bit of practice chewing, you can lightly mash the finished stew with a fork.
Allergy and Safety Information
- This recipe contains gluten (as barley is a gluten-containing grain) and celery. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
- Although honey is allowed from 12 months of age, this savory recipe completely avoids added sugar.
- If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or transitioning to family meals, it is best to speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Pearl barley is an excellent source of complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber, providing sustained energy. The colorful root vegetables supply essential vitamins, such as vitamin A from the carrots.
