- 100 g red lentils (organic if possible)
- 250 ml water (for boiling)
- 3 tbsp cloudy apple juice (100 percent fruit)
- 1 tbsp rapeseed oil (canola oil)
- 1 pinch sweet paprika powder
- 1 tsp finely chopped parsley
Preparation
- Rinse the red lentils thoroughly in a fine mesh sieve under running water.
- Bring the water to a boil in a small pot, add the lentils, and simmer over medium heat for about 15 minutes until soft.
- Drain any excess water and let the lentils cool slightly.
- Place the lentils, apple juice, rapeseed oil, and paprika powder into a tall blending container.
- Blend everything with an immersion blender until a smooth, creamy consistency is reached.
- Fold in the parsley and allow the spread to cool. Always test the temperature before serving to your child.
Variations and Tips
- Carrot and lentil mix: Boil a small piece of diced carrot along with the lentils to give the spread a sweet vegetable note.
- Storage: The spread keeps well in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days. It can also be easily frozen in small portions.
- Adjusting texture: For older children, you can leave a portion of the cooked lentils unblended to add a bit more texture.
- For the whole family: Adults can easily season their portion at the table with a pinch of salt, some pepper, or a squeeze of lemon juice.
Allergy and Safety Notes
This recipe is naturally free from common major allergens like dairy, eggs, or nuts. It is a good idea to introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any reactions.
If you choose to add honey to your meals, it is safe from the first birthday onward. For younger babies, honey carries a risk of infant botulism. If you have any questions about your toddler's diet, always speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Red lentils are an excellent plant-based source of iron and valuable dietary fiber. The vitamin C from the apple juice helps the body absorb the plant-based iron much more effectively. This provides your child with important building blocks for healthy development and plenty of energy for the day.
