Mild Savoy Cabbage, Potato, and Beef Baby Puree
This mild savoy cabbage, potato, and beef puree is a wonderful winter dish that gently introduces your child to new seasonal flavors. Savoy cabbage is particularly easy to digest compared to other cabbage varieties and pairs perfectly with filling potatoes. This provides your baby with a warming, nutrient-rich meal for the colder months.
Ingredients
- 100 g savoy cabbage (preferably organic, hard stems removed)
- 100 g potatoes (floury or all-purpose)
- 50 g lean beef (such as round steak, preferably organic)
- 1 tbsp canola oil (refined or specific baby weaning oil)
- Approx. 100 ml water (for pureeing)
Preparation
- Wash the savoy cabbage thoroughly, remove the tough core, and cut the tender leaves into small pieces. Peel the potatoes and cut them into small cubes as well.
- Wash the beef, pat it dry, and cut it into very small pieces.
- Place the meat in a small pot with a little water and let it simmer gently for about 5 minutes.
- Add the potato and cabbage pieces and let everything cook together until soft, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes. The meat must be completely cooked through by the end.
- Blend the mixture with an immersion blender or in a food processor until it forms a very smooth, creamy puree. Add a little more cooking water as needed until you reach the desired consistency.
- Stir in the canola oil at the very end. Let the puree cool down well and always test the temperature before feeding your child.
Variations & Tips
- Different vegetables: If your child is trying savoy cabbage for the first time, you can replace half of it with mild carrots or parsnips.
- Storage: The puree can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. It also freezes beautifully in ice cube trays and will keep for up to three months.
- Adjusting texture: For the very first spoonfuls, blend the puree extra finely and add a little more water. Older children often enjoy a slightly chunkier texture.
- Family tip: Simply cook double or triple the amount of vegetables and meat. Before pureeing, you can take out the parents' portion and season it generously with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
Allergy & Safety Notes
Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts so you can easily observe any potential reactions. The beef must always be cooked completely through for babies. Do not add any salt or sugar to the puree, as your child's kidneys are still very sensitive. If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods, please consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Info
This dish provides valuable iron from the beef, which supports your child's blood formation and overall development. The vitamin C from the savoy cabbage and potatoes helps the little body absorb the iron from the meat optimally. Additionally, the mild fiber promotes gentle digestion.
