Mild Spelt Cheese Sticks for Toddlers
These crispy and chew-friendly sticks made from spelt flour, butter, and mild grated cheese make a wonderful snack for in-between meals. They are excellent for nibbling and gently encourage your child's fine motor skills. A savory companion for the playground or an afternoon break that the whole family can enjoy.
Ingredients
- 150 g spelt flour (light or whole grain mix)
- 75 g soft butter
- 75 g mild grated cheese (such as young Gouda or mild cheddar)
- 1 egg yolk (medium size)
- 2 tbsp water
- A tiny pinch of salt (optional, fine in moderation for children over 12 months)
- A little extra flour for dusting the work surface
Preparation
- Place the spelt flour, soft butter, grated cheese, egg yolk, and water into a mixing bowl. Knead everything with your hands or a food processor until a smooth, pliable dough forms.
- Wrap the dough in a beeswax wrap or cling film. Let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes so it is easier to shape later.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit, standard bake) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about half a centimeter thick. Use a knife or pizza cutter to cut it into finger-thick sticks, about ten centimeters long.
- Place the sticks on the baking sheet and bake for about 12 to 15 minutes, until they turn golden brown.
- Let the cheese sticks cool completely on a wire rack before eating. Always check the temperature before offering the snack to your child.
Variations and Tips
- Herb Twist: Mix a teaspoon of finely chopped mild herbs like parsley or a little dried thyme into the dough.
- Storage: Kept in an airtight container at room temperature, the sticks will last about three to four days. This keeps them nice and crispy.
- Freezing: The raw dough freezes beautifully (for up to three months). When needed, simply thaw, shape, and bake fresh.
- For the Parents: Sprinkle some of the sticks with paprika or sesame seeds before baking for extra flavor at the family table.
