Mild Spelt Cut-Out Cookies with Real Vanilla for Kids
Introduction
These mild spelt cut-out cookies with real vanilla bring the magic of the holiday season right into your kitchen. Cutting out shapes together supports fine motor skills and brings great joy to many children. With less sugar and fine spelt flour, it becomes a gentle treat that the whole family can enjoy.
Ingredients
- 250 g light spelt flour (ideally organic)
- 100 g cold butter (cut into small cubes)
- 60 g mild raw cane sugar or coconut sugar
- 1 egg (medium size)
- Seeds from half a real vanilla bean
- 1 pinch of Ceylon cinnamon
Preparation
- Place the spelt flour, cold butter cubes, sugar, egg, vanilla seeds, and cinnamon into a large bowl. Knead everything quickly with your hands until a smooth and firm ball of dough forms.
- Wrap the dough in a beeswax wrap or parchment paper. Let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 to 60 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (conventional heat). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to a thickness of about three to four millimeters. Let your child cut out various shapes and place them on the baking sheet.
- Bake the cookies in the oven for about 10 to 12 minutes until the edges are lightly golden brown.
- Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack. Always check the temperature before your child takes the first bite.
Variations & Tips
- Fruity Twist: Grate a little fresh, untreated organic lemon zest into the dough for a bright, citrusy flavor.
- Storage: The baked cookies keep well in an airtight tin at room temperature for about two to three weeks. You can easily freeze the raw dough and let it thaw in the fridge overnight when needed.
- Adjusting Texture: For younger children, you can roll the dough slightly thicker and bake the cookies for a shorter time so they remain softer.
- For the Whole Family: Adults can decorate their portion of the baked cookies with a dark chocolate glaze or finely chopped almonds.
Allergy & Safety Notes
This recipe contains wheat (spelt), egg, and milk (butter), which are recognized allergens. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to carefully observe any potential reactions. Completely avoid honey for children under 12 months due to the risk of infant botulism. If you decide to add nuts to variations, use only finely ground nuts to prevent choking hazards in young children. If you have any concerns about introducing new foods or potential allergies, please always consult your pediatrician.
Nutrition Note
Spelt flour provides valuable complex carbohydrates and dietary fiber, offering long-lasting energy for active play. The real vanilla adds a natural and sweet aroma, which helps reduce the need for added sugar. This creates a balanced treat that fits perfectly into a busy family day.
