Mild Thumbprint Cookies with Strawberry Puree for Toddlers

Baking with kids12+m 30 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Tree nuts, Honey

Baking together for little foodies

These mild thumbprint cookies are perfect for a cozy baking afternoon, as shaping the dough and pressing the thumbprints wonderfully supports your child's fine motor skills. They are made entirely without refined sugar, getting their natural sweetness from fruit puree and applesauce. Kneading the dough together is fun and naturally encourages a positive relationship with family meals.

Ingredients for 2 to 3 portions

  • 150 g spelt flour (white or whole wheat, preferably organic)
  • 50 g finely ground almonds
  • 70 g soft butter
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
  • 3 tbsp pure strawberry puree (or raspberry puree, no added sugar)

Step by step to cookie happiness

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (standard bake) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Knead the flour, ground almonds, soft butter, applesauce, and optional honey in a bowl until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Together with your child, roll the dough into small, walnut-sized balls and place them on the baking sheet.
  4. Now your child can gently press small indents into each dough ball using their thumb (or the back of a wooden spoon).
  5. Fill each little well with a small dollop of strawberry puree.
  6. Bake the cookies for about 12 to 15 minutes until they are lightly golden brown.
  7. Let the cookies cool completely on a wire rack and check the temperature before letting your little one enjoy them.

Variations and practical tips

  • Fruity variety: You can easily swap the strawberry puree for unsweetened applesauce or mango puree.
  • Storage: The cookies will keep for about three to four days in an airtight container in the fridge. They also freeze beautifully and can be thawed individually as needed.
  • For the whole family: Adults can dust their cookies with a little powdered sugar or a pinch of cinnamon after baking.
  • Adjusting texture: For a softer cookie, you can add a splash of milk or plant-based drink to the dough before baking to make it more pliable.

Allergy notes and safety

This recipe contains gluten (spelt flour), dairy (butter), and tree nuts (almonds). Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily spot any potential allergies.

Honey warning: Children under 12 months must not eat honey due to the risk of infant botulism. Always use finely ground nuts or smooth nut butters for young children to prevent choking hazards. If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods or your child's diet, please consult your pediatrician.

Valuable nutrients for daily adventures

Thanks to the spelt flour and ground almonds, these cookies provide valuable dietary fiber and healthy fats that offer lasting energy. The fruit puree adds a natural dose of vitamin C, which helps the body absorb iron from the grains. This means your child is enjoying a tasty treat while also getting important nutrients for their daily growth.
