Mild Vanilla Semolina Cutout Cookies

These mild vanilla semolina cookies are a wonderful way to discover the joy of baking together with your child. The soft dough is easy to cut out, playfully encouraging the fine motor skills of little hands. Thanks to the gentle sweetness of applesauce, you offer a delicious and balanced treat for the family table.

Ingredients: What you need

  • 150 g spelt flour
  • 100 g soft wheat semolina
  • 80 g unsweetened applesauce
  • 60 g soft butter
  • 1 tbsp honey (only for children 12 months and older)
  • Seeds of half a vanilla bean (or 1 tsp vanilla extract)

Preparation: Step by step

  1. Preheat the oven to 340 degrees Fahrenheit (170 degrees Celsius). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the spelt flour, semolina, and vanilla seeds well in a mixing bowl.
  3. Add the applesauce, soft butter, and honey. Knead everything into a smooth, pliable dough.
  4. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about a quarter inch thick.
  5. Together with your child, cut out your favorite shapes and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes until they are lightly golden brown.
  7. Let them cool completely on a wire rack. Always check the temperature before offering them to your child.

Variations and everyday tips

  • Different fruit sauce: Simply swap the applesauce for unsweetened pear or peach puree to discover new flavors.
  • Storage: The cookies will keep for about four days in an airtight container in the fridge. They also freeze beautifully and can be thawed individually as needed.
  • Tip for the family: Adults and older siblings often enjoy a little powdered sugar or cinnamon dusted over their portion before eating.
  • Adjusting texture: For younger toddlers, shape the dough into small, thick sticks instead of flat cookies, as these are even easier to grasp.

Allergy notes and safety

This recipe contains gluten (spelt, semolina) and dairy (butter). Introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.

Caution: Honey is strictly off limits for babies under 12 months, as it can contain dangerous bacteria that cause infant botulism. For children past their first birthday, honey is safe. If you are preparing the dough for a younger baby, simply leave the honey out.

If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or transitioning to family meals, talk to your pediatrician.

Nutrients for little explorers

The combination of spelt flour and soft wheat semolina provides complex carbohydrates, giving your child long lasting energy for an active day. The butter contains important fats that support the absorption of fat soluble vitamins from other meals. At the same time, the recipe skips refined sugar, relying instead on the mild sweetness of the fruit.
