Mini Veggie Face Pizzas: Baking Fun for Kids
This recipe for mini pizzas brings great joy to the family kitchen and is perfect for children from three years of age. By kneading the dough and arranging the funny faces, little ones practice their fine motor skills. At the same time, they get to know different vegetables in a playful and happy way.
Ingredients
For 2 to 3 portions you will need the following ingredients:
For the dough:
- 250 g spelt flour (type 630 or all-purpose, organic if possible)
- 125 ml lukewarm water
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tiny pinch of salt
For the sauce:
- 150 ml strained tomatoes (passata)
- 1 tsp dried oregano
For the toppings (faces):
- 1 small red bell pepper
- 50 g sweet corn (canned, unsweetened)
- 4 cherry tomatoes
- 50 g grated mozzarella cheese
Preparation
- Mix the flour, lukewarm water, yeast, olive oil, and the pinch of salt in a bowl. Knead everything vigorously until a smooth and supple dough forms.
- Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes. It will visibly double in size during this time.
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (about 400 degrees Fahrenheit) on conventional heating. Divide the dough into six small balls and flatten them into round discs.
- Mix the strained tomatoes with the oregano and spread the sauce evenly over the mini pizzas. Sprinkle the grated cheese lightly on top.
- Now cut the vegetables into small pieces and arrange them as eyes, a nose, and a smiling mouth on the pizzas.
- Bake the mini pizzas in the oven for about 12 to 15 minutes, until the edges are golden brown. Let them cool down well before serving and always test the temperature so no one burns their mouth.
Variations & Tips
- Feel free to swap the vegetables according to preference: zucchini slices or mild olives make excellent eyes.
- The baked pizzas keep in the fridge for about two days. They also freeze wonderfully and can be briefly reheated in the oven when needed.
- For younger siblings, you can make the dough slightly softer and dice the toppings very finely.
- Parents can refine their own pizzas after baking with fresh arugula, a little garlic oil, or spicy cheese.
