Pigs in a Pretzel Blanket with Mild Mustard Dip

Snacks2+y 30 min 4Medium
Contains: Gluten, Egg, Dairy, Mustard

This savory treat is very popular with many children aged three and up, making it a wonderful snack for an active afternoon. The combination of carbohydrate-rich pretzel dough and protein-packed sausages provides quick energy for playing. Cooking and dipping together also supports fine motor skills and is simply a lot of fun.

Ingredients

This recipe makes 2 to 3 portions.

  • 1 roll of refrigerated fresh pretzel dough (approx. 400 g)
  • 6 small, mild sausages (like mild frankfurters, organic if possible)
  • 1 egg yolk (whisked with 1 tbsp of water)
  • For the dip:
  • 3 tbsp plain yogurt (whole milk)
  • 1 tsp mild mustard
  • 1 pinch of sweet paprika

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat). Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll the pretzel dough and cut it into six equal rectangles.
  3. Wrap each sausage in a dough rectangle and press the edges firmly to seal.
  4. Place the wrapped sausages on the baking tray and brush them with the egg yolk mixture.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Meanwhile, mix the yogurt, mustard, and paprika until a smooth, creamy dip forms.
  7. Let the baked sausages cool down well before serving. Always do a quick temperature test before your child takes a bite.

Variations & Tips

  • Veggie Alternative: Instead of sausages, you can use pre-cooked carrot sticks or zucchini strips as a delicious filling.
  • Storage: The baked rolls keep well in the fridge for up to two days. You can also freeze them easily and briefly reheat them in the oven when needed.
  • For the whole family: Adults can easily spice up their portion of the dip with a little chili or spicy mustard.
  • Bake together: Let your child help roll up the dough, which is a great way to practice finger dexterity.

Allergy & Safety Notes

  • This recipe contains gluten, egg, mustard, and dairy (EU14 allergens).
  • Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to carefully observe any potential reactions.
  • Make sure the sausages have a soft texture and cut them into bite-sized pieces if needed to prevent choking.
  • If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or potential allergies, it is best to consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

The sausages provide valuable proteins that support growth at this age. The pretzel dough offers quickly available carbohydrates for sustained energy during playtime. Additionally, the yogurt dip contributes a portion of calcium, which supports healthy bone development.
