Pumpkin and Apple Puree with a Touch of Cinnamon

Seasonal5+m 25 min 4 VeganEasy

This warming puree of mild Hokkaido pumpkin and sweet apple is a wonderful choice for chilly autumn days and a gentle start to solid foods. The natural sweetness of the apple makes the meal highly appealing to many children. At the same time, this combination provides valuable vitamins for healthy development.

Ingredients

  • 200 g Hokkaido pumpkin (organic recommended)
  • 100 g mild apple (such as Gala or Fuji)
  • 1 pinch of Ceylon cinnamon (very mild and age-appropriate)
  • 1 tablespoon of high-quality baby oil (such as canola oil)
  • 50 ml water for consistency

Preparation

  1. Wash the Hokkaido pumpkin thoroughly, cut it in half, remove the seeds, and chop it into small cubes.
  2. Peel the apple, remove the core, and dice it into small pieces as well.
  3. Bring the pumpkin and apple cubes to a boil in a small pot with the water, then let them simmer gently for about 10 to 15 minutes until very soft.
  4. Remove the pot from the heat, add the pinch of Ceylon cinnamon, and blend everything with an immersion blender until you have a very smooth, creamy consistency with no lumps.
  5. Stir in the oil and let the puree cool down to body temperature. Always test the temperature on your wrist before feeding your child.

Variations & Tips

  • Different vegetables: You can easily swap the pumpkin for mild carrots or sweet potatoes.
  • Storage: The puree stays fresh in the fridge for up to two days when covered.
  • Freezing: This recipe freezes beautifully. Portion it into ice cube trays for easy thawing, and it will keep for up to three months.
  • Family tip: If you cook a larger batch, you can add some ginger, salt, and pepper to the adult portion and enjoy it as a comforting autumn soup.

Allergy & Safety Information

Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. The common three-day rule is very helpful for gently integrating new foods into the menu.

Never use honey for babies under 12 months, as it can contain dangerous bacteria. Cinnamon naturally contains coumarin, so make sure to exclusively use the milder Ceylon cinnamon for young children.

If you have any uncertainties about starting solids or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutrition Note

Hokkaido pumpkin is rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A to support eye health. The apple provides gentle fiber for good digestion as well as vitamin C. The added canola oil helps the body absorb the fat-soluble vitamins from the vegetables effectively.
