Quick Sugar-Free Strawberry Chia Jam
This fruity strawberry chia jam is a wonderful alternative to traditional, heavily sweetened spreads. Especially in their second year, many children discover the family table and want to eat exactly what the adults are having. This spread provides valuable nutrients for a successful start to the day through the strawberries and chia seeds. In addition, the jam is very easy to prepare together with your child. Kneading and stirring together sparks joy for food and encourages curiosity about new flavors.
Ingredients
- 200 g fresh strawberries (preferably organic, as these often have fewer pesticide residues)
- 2 tbsp chia seeds (as a natural thickener)
- 1 tsp lemon juice (freshly squeezed, for a light freshness)
- Optional: 1 tsp honey or maple syrup (only suitable for children over 12 months)
- Some soft spelt bread or whole wheat bread for serving
Preparation
- Wash the strawberries thoroughly under running water. Remove the green leaves and cut the fruit into small, bite-sized pieces.
- Place the strawberry pieces in a shallow bowl. Mash them with a fork into a fine puree until the desired consistency is reached. Alternatively, you can briefly process the berries with an immersion blender for an extra smooth texture.
- Now thoroughly stir the chia seeds and freshly squeezed lemon juice into the strawberry mash. If you want to add a little sweetness, mix the honey or maple syrup into the mixture now.
- Let the fruit mixture swell at room temperature for about 15 to 20 minutes. During this time, the chia seeds bind the liquid until a jelly-like, thick consistency forms. Stir once or twice in between so the seeds do not clump together.
- Transfer the finished jam into a clean jar with a screw top. Store the spread in the refrigerator until ready to eat. Always check the temperature before feeding if you have toasted the bread for your child beforehand.
Variations & Tips
- Easily vary the fruit depending on the season. Raspberries, blueberries, or soft peaches also work beautifully for this quick recipe.
- For a finer texture, you can lightly grind the chia seeds in a blender beforehand. This makes the jam even smoother and more pleasant for little eaters who are still getting used to grainy textures.
- The jam keeps in a clean, airtight jar in the refrigerator for about three to four days. It also freezes wonderfully. It is best to use small ice cube trays for easy, as-needed portioning.
- A tip for the whole family: Adults can additionally enhance the jam with a pinch of ground vanilla, some cinnamon, or fresh mint. This makes it taste even better at the shared breakfast table.
Allergy & Safety Notes
- Always introduce new foods individually and in small amounts. This allows you to observe any potential intolerances in your child easily and calmly.
- This recipe does not contain any major EU14 allergens, provided you use pure, unprocessed ingredients.
- Caution with honey: Children under twelve months must not eat honey due to the risk of dangerous infant botulism. If younger siblings are eating too, simply leave the honey out entirely.
- There is generally a choking hazard with nuts or seeds. Therefore, always use them in solid foods only finely ground or well-soaked, as described in this recipe.
- If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods, allergies, or your toddler's general diet, please always speak with your pediatrician.
