Savory Cheese and Herb Sticks for Toddlers

Baking with kids12+m 60 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy

Introduction

This simple recipe for cheese and herb sticks is wonderful for children around twelve months and older. The dough is easy to shape, which playfully supports fine motor skills during shared baking time. At the same time, this savory snack offers a great way to discover new flavors at the family table. Kneading and rolling together also creates beautiful memories in the kitchen. The mild flavors are perfect for little foodies who are getting used to family meals.

Ingredients

  • 150 g spelt flour (light or whole grain, ideal for a wholesome diet)
  • 75 g cold butter (cut into small cubes)
  • 50 g grated mild cheese (such as young Gouda, mild cheddar, or Monterey Jack)
  • 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh herbs (parsley, chives, or mild thyme)
  • 3 to 4 tbsp cold water
  • Optional: 1 tiny pinch of salt (fine in moderation for toddlers over 12 months)

Preparation

  1. Wash your hands and your child's hands thoroughly before baking. Place the flour, the cold butter cubes, the cheese, and the herbs into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Quickly knead the ingredients with your hands. This is a fantastic sensory experience for your child.
  3. Gradually add the cold water until a smooth dough forms that no longer sticks to your fingers.
  4. Cover the dough and let it rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes so it becomes easier to shape later.
  5. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Together with your child, roll small portions of the dough into fun snakes or thick sticks.
  7. Bake the sticks for about 12 to 15 minutes until they are lightly golden brown and crispy.
  8. Let the baked goods cool completely before eating. Always check the temperature on the inside of your wrist before your child takes a bite.

Variations and Tips

  • Hidden Veggies: Finely grate a little carrot or zucchini, squeeze out the excess liquid, and knead the vegetable into the dough. This provides extra nutrients and a beautiful color.
  • Pizza Sticks: For a fruity twist, you can knead a teaspoon of mild tomato paste into the dough. This gives the sticks a delicious pizza flavor that many children love.
  • Storage: Once cooled, the sticks keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for about two to three days. They also freeze wonderfully. It is best to freeze them in small portions and briefly reheat them in the oven when needed.
  • Adjusting Texture: For younger eaters, you can roll the sticks a bit thicker and bake them a few minutes less so they remain softer on the inside.
  • For the Parents: Before baking, sprinkle a portion of the sticks with some coarse sea salt, paprika, or caraway seeds. This way, adults have a savory snack for coffee time or dinner, too.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten from the spelt flour and dairy from the butter and cheese. These ingredients are among the common allergens. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any reactions. Make sure your child is sitting upright and is supervised while eating. Although this recipe does not contain honey or nuts, as a general rule: honey is safe only from 12 months, and nuts must only be offered finely ground due to the choking hazard. If you have any concerns about introducing new foods or allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

The mild cheese in this recipe provides valuable calcium, which supports bone growth. Spelt flour offers lasting energy and contains important B vitamins and fiber, which support healthy digestion. Fresh herbs also bring a nice touch of vitamins and beneficial plant compounds. This makes the snack a nutritious addition to your daily family meals.
