Introduction

These savory ham and cheese muffins make a wonderful snack for children aged three and older. They provide valuable energy for active afternoons and are easy for little hands to hold. The combination of protein and carbohydrates is satisfying and fuels new discoveries.

Ingredients

Makes about 6 small muffins (2 to 3 portions):

  • 100 g spelt flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 egg (medium)
  • 50 ml whole milk
  • 30 ml mild canola oil
  • 50 g cooked ham (finely diced)
  • 50 g grated cheese (like mild cheddar or gouda)
  • A pinch of sweet paprika
  • A little butter or oil for the pan

Preparation

  1. Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit) and lightly grease a muffin tin.
  2. In a bowl, mix the flour with the baking powder and the sweet paprika.
  3. In a second bowl, whisk the egg together with the milk and canola oil until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and stir gently until a moist batter forms.
  5. Carefully fold the diced ham and grated cheese into the batter.
  6. Divide the mixture into the muffin cups and bake for about 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Let the muffins cool completely after baking. Always check the temperature inside before serving so your child does not burn their mouth.

Variations & Tips

  • Hidden veggies: Finely grate a small carrot or some zucchini and mix it into the batter for extra nutrients.
  • Storage: Stored in an airtight container in the fridge, these muffins stay fresh for about two to three days.
  • Freezing: You can easily freeze the baked muffins and thaw them individually as needed.
  • For the whole family: Feel free to add fresh herbs, green onions, or a pinch of black pepper to the adult portions.

Allergy & Safety Information

This recipe contains wheat/gluten, egg, and dairy. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily spot any potential reactions. Make sure to choose a ham that is not too heavily salted. If you have any concerns about your child's diet or potential allergies, consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information
