Savory Ham and Cheese Pancakes for the Family

Family meals2+y 30 min 4Medium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Egg

Introduction

This dish is a wonderful, savory alternative to sweet pancakes and is perfectly suited for children aged three and older. The melted cheese and mild ham make the meal highly appealing to many children. At the same time, the recipe provides valuable energy for active afternoons.

Ingredients

  • 150 g spelt flour (type 630, organic if possible)
  • 300 ml whole milk
  • 2 eggs (medium size)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp canola oil or butter for frying
  • 100 g mild cooked ham (thinly sliced)
  • 100 g grated mild cheese (like Gouda or mild cheddar)

Preparation

  1. In a bowl, whisk together the flour, milk, eggs, and a small pinch of salt until you have a smooth batter. Let the batter rest for about 10 minutes.
  2. Heat a little canola oil or butter in a non-stick pan over medium heat.
  3. Pour a ladle of batter into the pan and cook the pancake on both sides for 2 to 3 minutes each until golden brown.
  4. While still in the pan, cover half of the finished pancake with some ham and cheese. Fold the other half over and let the cheese melt over low heat for one to two minutes.
  5. Remove the pancake from the pan and let it cool briefly on a plate. Always check the temperature before serving the food to your child.

Variations and Tips

  • Veggie Boost: Mix some finely grated zucchini or carrots directly into the batter.
  • Storage: Finished pancakes keep well in the fridge for up to two days. They also freeze wonderfully without the filling.
  • Family Tip: For adults, you can spice up the filling with fresh herbs, spring onions, or a little black pepper.
  • Side Dish: A small side salad with cucumber and a mild dressing pairs perfectly with this meal.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains gluten (spelt flour), eggs, and dairy (milk, cheese, butter). These are common allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any potential reactions. Make sure the ham is not overly salty for young children. If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

The pancakes provide valuable proteins and complex carbohydrates through the spelt flour and eggs. The cheese is a good source of calcium, which is especially important for bone development at this age. Paired with a serving of vegetables or raw salad, this creates a balanced meal for your child.
