Savory Tomato and Herb Pull-Apart Bread for Kids

Baking with kids2+y 100 min 4 VeggieHard
Contains: Gluten, Dairy

Great Fun for Little Bakers

This colorful pull-apart bread is a wonderful baking project for little helpers aged three and up. Kneading the dough and stacking the slices together supports fine motor skills and is a lot of fun. At the same time, this bread provides valuable energy for active afternoons.

Ingredients

For a small loaf pan (about 2 to 3 generous child portions) you will need:

  • 250 g all-purpose flour or spelt flour
  • 120 ml lukewarm water
  • 20 g fresh yeast or 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 pinch of salt

For the filling:

  • 50 g soft butter
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp dried Italian herbs (oregano, basil)
  • 1 small garlic clove (optional, finely minced)

Preparation

  1. Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm water and let it rest briefly.
  2. Combine the flour, olive oil, yeast mixture, and a pinch of salt in a bowl, kneading until a smooth dough forms.
  3. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes until it has visibly doubled in size.
  4. Meanwhile, mix the soft butter with the tomato paste and dried herbs until smooth.
  5. Roll out the dough on a floured surface into a rectangle, about half a centimeter thick.
  6. Spread the tomato-herb butter evenly over the dough.
  7. Cut the dough into squares that are roughly the width of your loaf pan.
  8. Stack the squares like an accordion and place them standing up in a greased small loaf pan.
  9. Bake the bread in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius (standard bake) for about 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let the bread cool completely before serving, and always check the temperature of the inside.

Variations and Tips

Hidden Veggies: Mix some finely grated carrot or zucchini into the dough to incorporate extra nutrients.

Cheese Lovers: Sprinkle a mild grated cheese (like Gouda or mozzarella) over the tomato butter before stacking.

Storage: Stored in an airtight container, the bread will keep for about two days in the fridge. It also freezes beautifully and can be warmed up slice by slice in the toaster.

Family Tip: Parents can enjoy this bread at the table with a spicy dip or a drizzle of chili oil.

Allergy Information and Safety

This recipe contains gluten and dairy (EU14 allergens). Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any reactions.

Ensure your child is seated while eating to minimize the risk of choking. If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Everyday Nutrients

The flour provides complex carbohydrates, offering long-lasting energy for an active day. Tomato paste contains valuable lycopene and vitamin C, which supports iron absorption from plant-based sources. The herbs not only add great flavor but also bring beneficial phytonutrients to the plate.
