Simple Date-Butter Cut-out Cookies
Baking with children is a beautiful experience for all the senses. A classic shortcrust pastry sweetened only with mild date puree is an excellent choice for cozy baking afternoons together. The consistency is ideal for toddlers to cut out their favorite shapes, which playfully supports their fine motor skills. The finished cookies melt gently in the mouth and offer a delightful, age-appropriate treat entirely without refined sugar.
Ingredients
- 150 g wheat flour (all-purpose or fine spelt flour)
- 100 g cold butter (cut into small cubes)
- 50 g soft dates (pitted)
- 2 tbsp hot water
- 1 pinch Ceylon cinnamon (optional)
Preparation
- Pour the hot water over the dates and let them soak for about 10 minutes. Blend the mixture until a smooth date puree forms.
- Place the flour, cold butter cubes, date puree, and optional cinnamon in a mixing bowl.
- Knead everything quickly with your hands until a smooth, cohesive dough comes together.
- Wrap the dough in beeswax wrap or cling film and place it in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (conventional heat) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
- Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about half a centimeter thick.
- Let your child cut out little cookies to their heart's content and place them on the tray.
- Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes until the edges are lightly golden brown.
- Let the cookies cool completely and check the temperature before your child takes a bite.
Variations & Tips
- Swap the flour: You can easily replace the wheat flour with fine spelt flour, which gives the cookies a slightly nuttier note.
- Vary the spices: A touch of unsweetened vanilla powder gives the cookies a particularly lovely aroma.
- Storage: The cookies will stay wonderfully fresh for about one to two weeks in an airtight cookie tin.
- Freeze the dough: The raw shortcrust dough freezes beautifully and can be thawed overnight in the fridge when needed.
- For the parents: Brush your own finished cookies with a little melted dark chocolate or a dollop of fruity jam.
Allergy and Safety Information
This recipe contains gluten from the flour as well as dairy from the butter, which are common allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to carefully observe any potential reactions in your child. If you wish to add nuts to the dough, only use finely ground ones to avoid a choking hazard. If you are unsure about introducing new foods or suspect food intolerances, please consult your pediatrician.
