Small Yeast Easter Bunnies with Applesauce: A Gentle Recipe for Kids
Introduction
These fluffy yeast Easter bunnies bring a lot of joy to the spring season and are wonderful for children aged three and up. The applesauce in the dough provides a pleasant, natural sweetness and a soft texture that small hands can easily grasp. Kneading and shaping the bunnies together also playfully supports your child's fine motor skills.
Ingredients
For about 6 small bunnies (2 to 3 portions):
- 250 g spelt flour (ideally organic)
- 1/2 packet active dry yeast (approx. 4 g)
- 100 g unsweetened applesauce
- 50 ml lukewarm milk (or plant-based alternative)
- 30 g soft butter (or mild canola oil)
- 1 pinch Ceylon cinnamon
- Raisins for the eyes (optional)
- A little milk for brushing
Preparation
- Mix the flour, dry yeast, and Ceylon cinnamon in a large bowl.
- Add the unsweetened applesauce, lukewarm milk, and soft butter.
- Knead everything for about five minutes until a smooth, pliable dough forms.
- Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 60 minutes, until it has significantly increased in volume.
- Shape small balls of dough for the body and head, placing them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Attach small rolls of dough as ears and gently press in raisins for eyes, if desired.
- Brush the bunnies with a little milk and bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius standard heating for about 15 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the yeast bunnies cool completely and always check the internal temperature before eating.
Variations and Tips
- Fruity alternative: Simply swap the applesauce for smooth pear purée.
- Storage: Stored in an airtight container, the bunnies will keep in the fridge for about two days. They also freeze exceptionally well and can be briefly reheated in the oven when needed.
- For the whole family: Adults can sprinkle the bunnies with chopped almonds or a little pearl sugar before baking.
- Adjusting texture: For children who prefer an especially soft bite, briefly cover the warm bunnies with a damp cloth right after baking.
Allergy and Safety Notes
This recipe contains gluten from the spelt flour and dairy. It is often helpful to introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
Make sure raisins are soft, or simply leave them out if you have concerns about choking hazards. If you have any uncertainties about nutrition or possible allergies, it is always a good idea to consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
