Smooth Amaranth Porridge with Apple and Blueberry
This smooth porridge is a wonderful way to introduce new flavors to your child. Amaranth provides valuable plant-based iron, while apple and blueberry add a gentle sweetness. The mixture can be pureed very finely, making it pleasant for those early spoonfuls.
Ingredients
- 20 g amaranth (grains, ideally organic)
- 60 g apple (peeled and cored, preferably a mild variety like Gala)
- 20 g blueberries (fresh or unsweetened frozen)
- 80 ml water (for the amaranth)
- 1 tsp high-quality rapeseed oil or baby food oil
Preparation
- Rinse the amaranth in a fine mesh sieve under hot water to remove any bitter compounds.
- Place the grains and 80 ml of water in a small pot and bring to a boil.
- Simmer gently on low heat for about 25 minutes until the amaranth is soft and the water is absorbed.
- Meanwhile, cut the apple into small pieces and wash the blueberries.
- Steam the fruit in a separate pot with a small splash of water for five to eight minutes until soft.
- Place the cooked amaranth, the soft fruit, and the oil into a tall blending container.
- Blend everything with an immersion blender until it forms a very fine, smooth puree.
- Allow the puree to cool to body temperature and always test the temperature before feeding.
Variations and Tips
- Instead of blueberries, you can use a few pieces of mild pear.
- The puree can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
- For meal prep, you can easily freeze the puree in ice cube trays and thaw in small portions as needed.
- If the puree is too thick, simply add a few spoons of water, breast milk, or formula.
Allergy and Safety Information
Introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any reactions. Ensure no whole blueberries remain in the puree to keep the texture perfectly smooth. Milk remains the primary source of nutrition for your child at this stage. If you have any uncertainties about starting solids, always speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Overview
Amaranth is an excellent source of plant-based iron and protein. The vitamin C from the apple and blueberries helps the body absorb the iron optimally. At the same time, the fruits provide valuable fiber for gentle digestion.
