Soft Cauliflower Cheese Nuggets for Toddlers

Snacks12+m 45 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Egg

These gently baked cauliflower cheese nuggets are a wonderful snack for little explorers from twelve months onwards. They are perfectly sized for small hands, encouraging independent eating at the family table. The soft texture makes chewing easy, while valuable nutrients support your child during their busy, active days.

Ingredients

For 2 to 3 portions you will need:

  • 250 g cauliflower (fresh or thawed)
  • 50 g mild grated cheese (like Gouda or mild cheddar)
  • 40 g rolled oats (quick oats)
  • 1 egg (medium)
  • 1 tsp canola oil
  • A pinch of sweet paprika
  • Optional: 1 tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Cut the cauliflower into small florets and steam them in a pot with a little water for about 10 minutes until soft.
  3. Drain the water and mash the cauliflower with a fork until you have a chunky but soft consistency.
  4. Mix the cooled cauliflower with the cheese, oats, egg, oil, and spices until well combined.
  5. Use your hands to form small, flat nuggets from the mixture and place them on the baking sheet.
  6. Bake the nuggets in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until they are golden brown, slightly crispy on the outside, and soft on the inside.
  7. Important: Let the nuggets cool down completely and test the temperature before your child takes a bite.

Variations and Tips

  • Instead of cauliflower, you can easily use broccoli or a mix of grated carrots and zucchini.
  • The nuggets can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
  • They are very freezer friendly. Freeze the nuggets individually on a plate before transferring them to a freezer bag.
  • For the parents: Season your own portion with a little salt, pepper, and a pinch of chili flakes before baking.

Allergy and Safety Notes

  • This recipe contains egg, gluten (oats), and dairy (cheese). Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts.
  • If offering nuts or seeds in other meals, ensure they are finely ground to avoid a choking hazard.
  • Honey is not safe for children under twelve months, but it can be enjoyed in moderation after the first birthday.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about introducing new foods, reach out to your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Cauliflower provides plenty of vitamin C, which helps the body absorb iron from plant based sources like oats. The mild cheese offers calcium, a valuable nutrient for bone growth at this active age. At the same time, the fiber from the oats keeps your child comfortably full and supports healthy digestion.
