Soft Oat and Apricot Balls for Babies
Introduction
These soft oat and apricot balls are a wonderful companion for early weaning adventures. They combine tender oats with unsulfured apricots, creating a pleasantly soft texture. This allows your child to explore new consistencies while valuable nutrients gently support their development. The recipe is easy to prepare and serves as an inviting, naturally sweet snack for little explorers.
Ingredients
- 50 g quick oats (organic preferred)
- 50 g unsulfured dried apricots
- 30 ml warm water (or breast milk/formula)
- 1 tsp mild canola oil
Preparation
- Place the unsulfured apricots in a small bowl, cover them with hot water, and let them soak for about 30 minutes until they are very soft.
- Drain the soaking water. Blend the apricots together with the canola oil and the 30 ml of warm water in a food processor until completely smooth and free of chunks.
- Mix the quick oats into the apricot puree and let the mixture rest for about 10 minutes. This allows the oats to absorb the moisture and become wonderfully soft.
- With damp hands, form the mixture into small, bite-sized balls. For very young babies, you can also serve the mixture as a fine mash or thin it out with a little extra liquid.
- Ensure the balls cool to room temperature before feeding, and always do a quick temperature test.
Variations & Tips
- For a different flavor, you can replace the apricots with soft, pitted dates or prunes.
- The balls can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days.
- They freeze beautifully. Place the balls individually on a plate in the freezer, then transfer them to a freezer bag once solid.
- For older children or adults, you can roll the balls in shredded coconut or finely ground almonds.
Allergy & Safety Information
Oats naturally contain gluten unless they are certified gluten-free. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. Ensure that dried fruits are unsulfured, as sulfur can irritate a sensitive baby's stomach. Never leave your child unattended while eating. If you have any concerns about starting solid foods or finding the right texture, please consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Oats provide valuable plant-based iron and important dietary fiber, which help keep little tummies satisfied. The apricots offer natural sweetness and support gentle digestion. Paired with a drop of oil, the body can optimally absorb the vitamins provided.
