Soft Potato and Carrot Sticks for Toddlers

Snacks12+m 55 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Egg

Introduction

These soft potato and carrot sticks are a wonderful snack for little explorers from 12 months onward. They are easy for your child to grasp and create very few crumbs. At the same time, they provide valuable energy for an active day at the family table.

Ingredients

For about 2 to 3 portions, you will need the following ingredients:

  • 300 g starchy potatoes
  • 150 g carrots (organic preferred)
  • 1 egg (medium)
  • 30 g grated cheese (mild, such as Gouda or Cheddar)
  • 2 tbsp spelt flour
  • 1 tbsp canola oil
  • A pinch of mild herbs (such as parsley or thyme)
  • A very small pinch of salt (optional, as small amounts are fine after 12 months)

Preparation

  1. Peel the potatoes and carrots, and cut them into chunks. Boil them in a pot with a little water for about 15 to 20 minutes until soft.
  2. Drain the water and let the vegetables steam off for a moment. Then, mash them thoroughly with a potato masher until smooth.
  3. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (conventional) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  4. Add the egg, grated cheese, spelt flour, canola oil, and herbs to the cooled vegetable mash. Mix everything well until a moldable dough forms.
  5. Shape small, elongated sticks with your hands and place them on the baking tray. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
  6. Let the sticks cool completely before serving. Always check the temperature inside before offering the snack to your child.

Variations & Tips

  • Swap the vegetables: You can easily replace the carrots with sweet potatoes or parsnips.
  • Storage: The sticks will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days. They also freeze wonderfully and can be reheated in the oven when needed.
  • For the whole family: Adults can enjoy their portion with a savory herb dip or a spicy sauce.
  • Adjusting the texture: For an even smoother consistency, you can puree the vegetables before baking instead of just mashing them.

Allergy & Safety Information

This recipe contains egg, cheese (dairy), and spelt flour (gluten), which are common allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any reactions.

If you modify the recipe, remember that nuts or seeds must only be used finely ground for this age group to prevent choking. Honey is safe after 12 months, though it is not needed for this savory recipe.

If you have any concerns about your child's diet or potential food allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

The combination of potatoes and carrots provides valuable carbohydrates and beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A. The egg and cheese offer important protein and calcium for growth. Canola oil contributes valuable fatty acids that support healthy development.
