Tender, carefully deboned fish in a light, creamy dill sauce makes a wonderful lunch for families. The soft potato cubes are perfect for toddlers to pierce with a fork or grab with their hands. This makes independent eating fun and gently supports fine motor skills.

Ingredients

  • 200 g saithe fillet (fresh or thawed, carefully deboned)
  • 300 g potatoes (waxy or all-purpose)
  • 1 tbsp butter or canola oil
  • 1 tbsp wheat flour
  • 150 ml whole milk
  • 50 ml low-sodium vegetable broth
  • 1 to 2 tbsp fresh dill (finely chopped)
  • A splash of lemon juice
  • A tiny pinch of salt (for the potato boiling water)

Preparation

  1. Peel the potatoes, cut them into small, bite-sized cubes, and boil them in lightly salted water for about 15 minutes until soft.
  2. Rinse the saithe under cold water, pat dry, and check carefully for bones. Cut the fish into bite-sized pieces.
  3. Melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat and whisk in the flour.
  4. Stirring constantly, gradually pour in the milk and vegetable broth until a smooth, creamy sauce forms.
  5. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, add the fish pieces, and cook gently over low heat for about 5 to 7 minutes until cooked through.
  6. Stir in the finely chopped dill and a splash of lemon juice.
  7. Drain the potatoes and serve them on a plate with the fish and sauce. Let the meal cool down well and always test the temperature before serving.

Variations and Tips

  • Veggie boost: Add small broccoli florets or peas to the sauce to make the dish even more colorful.
  • Storage: Leftovers can be kept in the refrigerator for up to two days. Freezing is not recommended for this dish, as the sauce may separate when thawed.
  • For the whole family: Parents can easily season their portions at the table with a little salt, pepper, and extra lemon.
  • Adjusting texture: For children who still find pieces challenging, you can easily mash the potatoes and fish with a fork.

Allergy and Safety Information

  • Allergens: This dish contains fish, milk, and gluten (wheat).
  • Please pay special attention to potential bones when preparing the fish.
  • Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts.
  • If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Saithe is a wonderful source of iodine and high-quality protein. These nutrients are highly beneficial for growth at this age. Potatoes provide long-lasting energy and important carbohydrates for active days. At the same time, the creamy sauce offers a good portion of calcium thanks to the milk.
