Soft Steamed Fennel Sticks for Babies

Snacks5+m 4Easy

Introduction

Fennel is often very popular with babies due to its mild, slightly sweet flavor. These soft steamed fennel sticks are wonderful for early weaning experiences and can be quite soothing during teething. Gentle steaming preserves the valuable nutrients that support healthy development.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium fennel bulb (approx. 250 g, organic if possible)
  • 1 tsp high-quality vegetable oil (like canola oil or specific baby oil)
  • A little water for steaming

Preparation

  1. Wash the fennel thoroughly, remove the tough green fronds, and cut out the hard core at the base.
  2. Cut the bulb into finger-thick, elongated sticks.
  3. Add a small amount of water to a pot with a steamer basket and bring to a boil.
  4. Place the fennel sticks inside and steam over medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes until they can be easily mashed with a fork.
  5. Remove the sticks, drizzle with the vegetable oil, and let them cool completely on a plate.
  6. Always test the temperature on the inside of your wrist before offering them to your child.

Variations & Tips

  • Adjusting texture: For the very first spoonfuls, you can puree the softly steamed fennel with a little cooking water and the oil into a very smooth, lump-free mash.
  • Combinations: Fennel pairs beautifully with mild apple or soft pear. Simply steam a few fruit slices alongside the fennel.
  • Storage: The prepared sticks will keep for about two days in the refrigerator when stored in an airtight container.
  • Freezing: You can easily freeze the cooked fennel. For purees, an ice cube tray works perfectly for portioning.
  • For the family: Adults can bake the leftover sticks in the oven with a little salt, pepper, and grated cheese.

Allergy & Safety Information

  • Fennel is naturally low in allergens. When introducing new foods, it is still advisable to offer them one at a time over three days.
  • Always ensure your child is sitting upright while eating and stay nearby.
  • Completely avoid salt, sugar, and honey (risk of botulism) during the first year of life.
  • If you have any concerns about introducing solid foods, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Fennel provides valuable dietary fiber, which supports gentle digestion. This mild vegetable also contains vitamin C, which helps the body absorb iron from other foods. The added canola oil supplies important fatty acids that are beneficial for brain development.
