Soft Sugar-Free Apple and Quark Rolls for Babies
Introduction
These small, fluffy rolls made from a mild quark and oil dough with finely grated apple are wonderfully easy for little hands to grasp. The quark keeps them exceptionally moist and soft, making them perfect for toothless baby gums. They offer a great way to introduce your child to new textures, while breast milk or formula remains their primary source of nutrition.
Ingredients
- 100 g low-fat quark (organic recommended)
- 3 tbsp canola oil (refined, suitable for baby food)
- 1 small apple (peeled and very finely grated)
- 150 g wheat flour (all-purpose) or spelt flour
- 1 tsp baking powder (sugar-free)
Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (standard bake) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Wash, peel, and grate the apple on a fine grater until it resembles a soft puree.
- Mix the quark, oil, and grated apple in a bowl until you have a smooth, even mixture.
- Combine the flour with the baking powder and quickly knead it into the quark mixture until a soft dough forms.
- Using wet hands, shape about six small, flat rolls and place them on the baking sheet.
- Bake the rolls for approximately 15 to 20 minutes until they are lightly golden but still very soft.
- Let the rolls cool completely before serving and check the temperature inside.
Variations & Tips
- Feel free to swap the apple for a very ripe, mashed banana or smooth pear puree.
- For younger babies, you can briefly soak the rolls in a little breast milk or formula before feeding to soften them further.
- Stored in an airtight container in the fridge, the rolls stay fresh for about two days.
- They freeze exceptionally well, ideally individually, and can be quickly reheated in the toaster or oven when needed.
- For older children or adults, you can enhance the remaining dough with a little cinnamon or raisins.
Allergy & Safety Notes
This recipe contains wheat (gluten) and quark (dairy). Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. Cow's milk products like quark are fine in small amounts for baking and cooking once you start solid foods. Ensure your child is sitting upright while eating, and always stay close by. If you have any concerns about introducing solid foods, speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
The quark provides valuable calcium and gentle protein, while the apple contributes natural vitamins. The canola oil supplies your child with important fatty acids that are valuable for brain development. This combination offers a nutritious base for little explorers, entirely without added sugar.
