Soft Sugar Free Date and Apricot Bars for Toddlers
These soft fruit bars make a wonderful snack for busy days, especially when your child is constantly on the move. The combination of dried fruits and oats provides valuable energy for little adventurers. At the same time, holding the handy bars helps your child practice fine motor skills in a playful way.
Ingredients
- 100 g soft pitted dates (organic preferred)
- 50 g unsulfured dried apricots
- 60 g fine rolled oats
- 1 tablespoon canola oil or mild coconut oil
- 2 to 3 tablespoons water
Preparation
- Place the dates and apricots along with the water into a food processor or blender. Puree everything until a sticky, smooth paste forms.
- Transfer the fruit mixture to a bowl and thoroughly knead in the fine oats and oil.
- Press the mixture flat onto a piece of parchment paper until it is about one centimeter thick.
- Place the flattened mixture in the refrigerator for about an hour to firm up.
- Cut the chilled block into handy bars. Always check the temperature and texture before serving to ensure they are comfortable for your child.
Variations and Tips
- Fruity variety: Swap the apricots for soft unsulfured raisins or dried plums.
- Storage: The bars will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for about four to five days. They also freeze beautifully and can be thawed individually as needed.
- Adjusting texture: For children who are already confident chewers, you can mix in a few puffed amaranth seeds for a slight crunch.
- For the whole family: Adults might enjoy dipping their portion into melted dark chocolate or adding a pinch of cinnamon.
Allergies and Safety
This recipe contains gluten from the oats. Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any potential reactions. Make sure all dried fruits are completely free of pits or hard pieces.
While honey is safe after the first birthday, this recipe relies entirely on the natural sweetness of the fruit. If you choose to add nuts, use only finely ground varieties, as whole nuts pose a choking hazard. If you have any concerns about your child's diet, always consult your pediatrician.
Nutrients for Little Explorers
Dates and apricots offer natural sweetness, valuable fiber, and potassium. The oats add iron and complex carbohydrates that keep little tummies full longer. This nutrient combination perfectly supports the active daily life of your child while promoting healthy digestion.
