Introduction
These soft sweet potato waffles make a wonderful snack for toddlers from 12 months onward. They are easy for little hands to grasp, which gently encourages independent eating and motor skills. Plus, they offer a natural sweetness that many children simply love, without any added sugar. When your child joins the family table, handy meals like these are a great addition to your shared menu.
Ingredients
- 150 g sweet potato puree (from about 1 medium sweet potato, organic preferred)
- 2 eggs (medium size)
- 100 ml cow's milk (or an unsweetened plant-based alternative)
- 100 g spelt flour (or all-purpose flour)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tbsp canola oil (for the waffle maker)
- A pinch of cinnamon (optional, for a warm flavor)
Preparation
- Peel the sweet potato, cut it into small cubes, and boil in a little water for about 10 to 15 minutes until soft. Drain the water and mash the pieces with a fork into a fine puree.
- In a large bowl, mix the sweet potato puree thoroughly with the eggs and the milk.
- Add the spelt flour, baking powder, and a pinch of cinnamon if desired. Stir everything until a smooth, creamy batter forms.
- Preheat the waffle maker to a medium setting and lightly brush it with canola oil.
- Pour about two tablespoons of batter per waffle into the iron and bake for 4 to 5 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the finished waffles cool on a wire rack. Always check the temperature before serving to ensure your child does not burn their mouth.
Variations & Tips
- Swap the veggies: Instead of sweet potatoes, pumpkin or carrot puree works beautifully in this recipe.
- Storage: The waffles will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
- Freezing: They are incredibly freezer-friendly. Freeze the waffles in individual portions and simply pop them in the toaster when needed.
- Adjusting the texture: For children who are just learning to chew, you can cut the waffles into narrow strips. This makes them easier to hold and safely chew.
- For the whole family: Adults can enjoy these waffles topped with a drizzle of maple syrup, fresh fruit, or even a savory herb dip.
Allergy & Safety Information
- This recipe contains eggs, milk, and gluten (spelt/wheat), which are common allergens.
- Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any potential reactions.
- If you choose to sweeten the recipe for older children with a little honey, remember: honey is not safe for children under 12 months due to the risk of infant botulism.
- If you have any concerns about introducing new foods or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Sweet potatoes provide plenty of beta-carotene, which the body converts into vitamin A to support healthy vision. The eggs and milk supply valuable protein needed for healthy growth during this active phase. Additionally, the fiber from the spelt flour keeps little tummies comfortably full and supports healthy digestion.
