Soothing Semolina Dumpling Soup with Mild Root Vegetables

PregnancySchwangerschaft 35 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Celery

During the first few weeks of pregnancy, your stomach is often quite sensitive. This mild soup warms you from the inside while providing gentle energy. The soft semolina dumplings and sweet root vegetables are very easy to digest.

Ingredients

  • 700 ml mild vegetable broth
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 small piece of celeriac or parsnip
  • 60 g semolina (wheat)
  • 150 ml milk (pasteurized)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • A pinch of salt and nutmeg
  • A little fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Peel the carrots and celeriac, then cut them into fine cubes.
  2. For the dumplings, bring the milk, butter, and a pinch of salt to a boil in a small pot.
  3. Remove the pot from the heat and slowly whisk in the semolina.
  4. Let the mixture rest briefly until it forms a soft dough that pulls away from the sides.
  5. In a second pot, bring the vegetable broth to a boil and simmer the diced vegetables for about ten minutes.
  6. Shape small dumplings from the semolina dough using two damp teaspoons.
  7. Drop the dumplings into the hot, non-boiling broth and let them steep for about ten minutes.
  8. Sprinkle the soup with a little fresh parsley before serving.

Good to know

The semolina dough can easily be prepared the night before and stored in the fridge. You can vary the vegetables depending on what appeals to you, perhaps adding a few diced potatoes.

When things feel difficult

If you are experiencing strong nausea, you can skip the vegetables entirely and just sip the clear broth with the dumplings. Eating several small meals throughout the day is often easier to manage than large portions. The broth provides hydration, while the semolina offers gentle nourishment.

Note

If you have persistent discomfort or questions about your diet during pregnancy, it is best to consult your midwife, your obstetrician, or your doctor.
