Spaghetti Bolognese with Hidden Root Vegetables for the Whole Family

Family meals2+y 35 min 4Medium
Contains: Gluten, Celery

Introduction

This mild Bolognese is a wonderful family meal that often appeals even to picky eaters. Thanks to the finely puréed root vegetables, the sauce provides valuable vitamins without any visible vegetable pieces. This makes shared meals at the family table enjoyable and naturally supports a balanced diet.

Ingredients

  • 250 g minced meat (mixed or beef, organic if possible)
  • 1 onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 150 g carrots
  • 100 g celeriac (celery root)
  • 400 g chopped tomatoes (canned or jarred)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 pinch of salt and pepper (use very sparingly)
  • 250 g spaghetti (e.g., whole wheat)

Preparation

  1. Peel the onion, garlic, carrots, and celeriac, then cut them into rough pieces.
  2. Finely chop the vegetables in a blender or with an immersion blender until a nearly smooth paste forms.
  3. Warm the olive oil in a pot over medium heat and gently sauté the vegetable purée for about five minutes.
  4. Add the minced meat and cook until crumbly, ensuring it is fully cooked through.
  5. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and oregano, then let the sauce simmer on low heat for about 15 minutes.
  6. Meanwhile, prepare the spaghetti in gently boiling water according to the package instructions.
  7. Before serving, let the sauce cool slightly and always test the temperature before your child takes the first bite.

Variations and Tips

  • Different vegetables: You can swap the celeriac for zucchini or parsnips at any time.
  • Storage: The sauce keeps in the fridge for about two days and freezes beautifully for up to three months.
  • Adjusting texture: For younger siblings, you can purée the finished sauce and pasta together for a smoother consistency.
  • Tip for parents: Adults can easily season their own portions at the table with chili flakes, a little more salt, or fresh Parmesan.

Allergy and Safety Information

This recipe contains celery and gluten (in the pasta), which are common allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to carefully observe any possible reactions. Remember to only offer nuts and seeds finely ground to young children to minimize the risk of choking. Honey is not suitable for babies under 12 months due to the risk of infant botulism. If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods or your child's diet, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

The beef in this sauce is an excellent source of iron, which is valuable for growth at this age. The tomatoes and root vegetables provide vitamin C, helping the body absorb the iron more easily. Additionally, whole wheat pasta offers long-lasting energy and beneficial dietary fiber.
