Spooky Sausage Mummies in Puff Pastry for Halloween

Seasonal2+y 30 min 4Medium
Contains: Gluten, Egg, Dairy, Mustard

Introduction

These crispy sausage mummies bring a lot of joy to the autumn season and are a wonderful treat for children from three years onward. Wrapping the dough together supports fine motor skills, while the savory snack provides energy for exciting afternoons. It is a lovely recipe to playfully awaken a love for cooking and eating.

Ingredients

For 2 to 3 portions you will need:

  • 1 roll of fresh puff pastry (approx. 275 g, organic if possible)
  • 6 mild sausages (such as frankfurters, either vegetarian or meat-based)
  • 1 egg yolk (medium size)
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • A little mild mustard or cream cheese (for the eyes)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Roll out the puff pastry and cut it into strips about one centimeter wide using a pizza cutter or a knife.
  3. Wrap the dough strips spirally around each sausage to make it look like a little mummy. Leave a small gap near the top for the face.
  4. Whisk the egg yolk with the milk and lightly brush the puff pastry mummies with the mixture so they turn golden brown during baking.
  5. Place the mummies on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for about 15 minutes, until the pastry is crispy and puffed up.
  6. Remove from the oven and let them cool down thoroughly. Before serving, use a small wooden skewer and a bit of mustard or cream cheese to dab on two little eyes, and check the temperature before eating.

Variations & Tips

  • Vegetarian option: Simply swap traditional sausages for vegetarian or vegan alternatives. Vegetable sticks, like firm carrots, also work nicely if they are slightly pre-cooked.
  • Storage info: The baked mummies will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. They can be briefly reheated in the oven to crisp up again.
  • For the whole family: Parents can sprinkle their own mummies with a little grated cheese before baking or serve them with a savory yogurt and herb dip.
  • Cooking together: Let your child help with the wrapping. This is not only fun but also builds confidence in the kitchen.

Allergy & Safety Information

  • This recipe contains gluten (puff pastry), egg and milk (egg wash), and mustard (decoration).
  • Introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any potential reactions.
  • Ensure your child is sitting calmly while eating, and cut the finished mummies into bite-sized pieces for younger eaters if needed.
  • If you have any uncertainties about nutrition or introducing new foods, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

This dish provides quick energy in the form of carbohydrates, which is especially useful on active days. The sausages contribute proteins that support growth. Paired with fresh vegetable sticks, this savory snack offers a balanced and child-friendly meal.
