Spring Pea and Kohlrabi Stew for Toddlers
This mild spring stew is wonderful for little explorers joining the family table. The combination of sweet peas and tender kohlrabi is often very well received by many children. At the same time, the dish provides valuable nutrients for growth and encourages independent spoon-feeding.
Ingredients
- 1 small kohlrabi (approx. 150 g)
- 100 g frozen or fresh peas
- 1 small carrot (approx. 80 g)
- 1 small potato (approx. 80 g)
- 50 g small soup noodles (e.g., star noodles)
- 500 ml mild vegetable broth (low sodium)
- 1 tbsp canola oil
- 1 pinch of mild herbs (e.g., parsley or thyme)
Preparation
- Peel the kohlrabi, carrot, and potato carefully. Cut the vegetables into small, bite-sized cubes.
- Heat the oil in a pot and gently sauté the diced vegetables for about two minutes.
- Pour in the low-sodium vegetable broth and let everything simmer gently over medium heat for about 10 minutes.
- Add the peas and the small soup noodles. Let the stew cook for another 5 to 8 minutes until the noodles are soft.
- Finally, stir in the mild herbs. Let the stew cool down well and always check the temperature before feeding.
Variations & Tips
- Family Upgrade: Parents can season their own portions at the table with a little salt, pepper, and a splash of lemon juice.
- Different Vegetables: Instead of kohlrabi, a piece of zucchini or broccoli also fits wonderfully into this spring dish.
- Storage: The stew will keep covered in the refrigerator for up to two days. It can also be easily frozen in individual portions.
- Adjusting Texture: If your child is still learning to chew larger pieces, you can lightly mash the stew with a fork at the end.
Allergy & Safety Information
This recipe contains gluten (noodles) and celery (often found in vegetable broth). Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. Now that your child is one year old, they can enjoy many meals at the family table. Always be mindful of hard foods or round items that could pose a choking hazard. If you have any uncertainties about introducing family foods or potential allergies, please speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Peas are a great source of plant-based protein and provide important iron for blood development. The kohlrabi contributes a good portion of vitamin C, which directly supports iron absorption in the body. Furthermore, the fiber from the vegetables ensures a pleasant feeling of fullness and supports good digestion.
