Frühlingshafter Erbsen-Zucchini-Brei mit einem Hauch Minze

Spring Pea and Zucchini Puree with a Hint of Mint

Seasonal5+m 15 min 4 VeganEasy

A light spring puree made from young peas and zucchini, offering a fresh taste with a tiny hint of mint. The smooth, slightly sweet texture brings joy to many babies exploring new flavors. This recipe gently introduces your child to green vegetables. Starting solid foods is an exciting milestone focused mainly on discovering new textures and aromas. Babies often eat just a few spoons at first, which is completely fine. The amounts will increase naturally over time.

The Right Time for the First Puree

Many parents wonder when the ideal moment for the first spoon has arrived. Often between the fifth and seventh month, babies show a clear interest in what their parents are eating. It is important that your child can hold their head up steadily and sit upright with a little support. Every little person has their own pace here. Some children happily open their mouths on the first try, while others take a few days longer to get used to the new sensation on their tongue. Accompany your child lovingly and without expectations on this culinary journey.

Ingredients

  • 100 g zucchini (organic if possible)
  • 100 g young peas (frozen or freshly shelled)
  • 1 small fresh mint leaf (adds a mild aroma)
  • 1 tbsp canola oil (or specific baby weaning oil)
  • 30 to 50 ml water (to adjust the texture)

Instructions

  1. Wash the zucchini thoroughly under running water and cut it into small, even cubes.
  2. Place the zucchini cubes, peas, and water into a small pot.
  3. Let the vegetables simmer gently, covered, over medium heat for about 10 minutes until very soft.
  4. Add the washed mint leaf during the final minute of cooking to gently release its flavor.
  5. Blend everything with an immersion blender into a very smooth, creamy puree with absolutely no lumps.
  6. Stir in the canola oil carefully with a spoon at the very end.
  7. Let the puree cool down to room temperature and always test the warmth on the back of your hand before feeding.

Variations and Tips

Swap the zucchini for mild potatoes if you want to make the puree a bit more filling. Potatoes also bind the water well and create a particularly creamy texture. This puree freezes beautifully. Pour small portions into clean ice cube trays to thaw exactly what you need later on. Stored in an airtight container, the freshly cooked puree keeps in the fridge for up to two days. For older children who are already chewing and enjoy chunky food, you can gently mash the ingredients with a fork instead of blending them smoothly. Parents can easily turn any leftover puree into a creamy spread or delicious dip for themselves by adding a pinch of salt, pepper, and a splash of cream.

Allergy and Safety Information

Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily spot any potential reactions. Waiting three days before offering another new ingredient is a helpful approach. This recipe is naturally free from the main EU14 allergens. Please remember that milk remains the primary source of nutrition throughout the first year. Solid foods simply complement the diet gently and gradually. If you have any concerns about starting solids, nutritional questions, or potential food sensitivities, please always talk to your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Peas provide valuable plant-based protein and important fiber, which gently support good digestion. Zucchini is a particularly mild vegetable and rich in water, making it very easy on a small tummy. The added canola oil fulfills an important role in baby food. It helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins from the vegetables and delivers essential fatty acids for early childhood development.
