Spring Swiss Chard, Potato, and Salmon Puree

Seasonal5+m 25 min 4Easy
Contains: Fish

Fresh Swiss chard brings a wonderful variety to the menu during the spring season. Combined with mild potatoes and valuable salmon, it creates a nutritious, smooth puree. This meal provides important building blocks for growth and offers a wonderfully creamy texture.

Ingredients

  • 100 g potatoes (peeled)
  • 50 g Swiss chard (tender green leaves only, washed)
  • 30 g salmon fillet (boneless, ideally organic or wild-caught)
  • 2 tbsp rapeseed oil (suitable for weaning)
  • A little water for consistency

Preparation

  1. Peel the potatoes and cut them into small cubes.
  2. Wash the Swiss chard, remove the tough stems, and cut the leaves into fine strips.
  3. Rinse the salmon fillet under cold water, pat dry, check carefully for bones, and cut into small pieces.
  4. Steam the potato cubes in a small pot with a little water until soft, which takes about ten minutes.
  5. Add the Swiss chard and salmon, then cook everything thoroughly for another five minutes.
  6. Drain the remaining cooking water and save it in a small bowl.
  7. Add the oil and blend everything with an immersion blender into a very fine, smooth puree, adding a little cooking water if needed.
  8. Allow the puree to cool down well before feeding and always test the temperature on the back of your hand.

Variations and Tips

  • Seasonal twist: If Swiss chard is not available, young spinach or mild zucchini also pair beautifully with salmon and potatoes.
  • Storage: The puree keeps well covered in the fridge for up to two days. It can also be frozen in ice cube trays, where it stays fresh for up to three months.
  • Adjusting texture: For those very first spoonfuls, you can add a little more water or breast milk to make the puree especially runny.
  • Family meal: Parents can prepare a larger portion of chard and salmon, season it with a little salt, pepper, and lemon, and enjoy it with boiled potatoes.

Allergy and Safety Information

  • This puree contains fish (salmon), which is one of the main allergens.
  • It is best to introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions (three-day rule).
  • It is important that the salmon is fully cooked. Raw fish is not suitable for babies.
  • Swiss chard naturally contains nitrates. The tender leaves work exceptionally well for babies, and high-nitrate vegetables are ideally not fed every single day.
  • If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods or specific ingredients, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutrition

Salmon is an excellent source of valuable omega-3 fatty acids, which support brain development. Potatoes provide easily digestible carbohydrates for energy. The Swiss chard contributes important vitamins and minerals that gently strengthen the immune system.
