Stuffed Salami and Mozzarella Pizza Wreath
A hearty and filling snack that is a hit at any celebration. The soft yeast dough is cut, generously filled, and braided into a decorative, festive wreath. This recipe is wonderfully suited for families with children from three years old. Little helpers can actively participate in kneading, rolling out, and adding the toppings. Kneading the soft dough supports fine motor skills and provides a wonderful sensory experience. At the same time, preparing the meal together sparks joy in eating and makes children proud of their own creation. Whether for a birthday party, a picnic in the park, or a cozy weekend dinner, this wreath is always a great choice.
The combination of carbohydrate-rich dough and protein-rich cheese provides plenty of energy for active days full of play and movement. Many children love the mild, familiar flavor of mozzarella and salami. The appealing round wreath shape turns the meal into a special experience at the family table. A slice of the wreath is easy to hold and fun to eat with small hands.
Ingredients
For the dough:
- 300 g all-purpose or spelt flour (preferably organic)
- 150 ml lukewarm water
- 0.5 cube fresh yeast (approx. 21 g) or 1 packet dry yeast
- 2 tbsp mild olive oil
- 1 pinch of salt
For the filling:
- 100 g mild salami (cut into small cubes)
- 150 g grated mozzarella cheese
- 100 ml tomato puree (passata)
- 1 tsp dried oregano
Makes one large wreath, enough for about 3 to 4 servings.
Preparation
- Crumble the yeast into the lukewarm water and stir well until it dissolves completely.
- Place the flour, olive oil, and a pinch of salt into a bowl. Add the yeast mixture and knead everything thoroughly until a smooth, supple dough forms.
- Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes, until it has significantly increased in volume.
- Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (approx. 400 degrees Fahrenheit) using top and bottom heat.
- Roll the dough out into a large circle (about 30 cm in diameter) on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Spread the tomato puree evenly over the dough, leaving a 10 cm circle completely bare in the center.
- Distribute the salami and mozzarella over the tomato sauce and sprinkle with oregano.
- Cut the bare dough in the center into a star shape (about 8 triangles). Fold the points of the triangles outward over the filling and press them gently into the outer edge.
- Bake the pizza wreath in the oven for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
- Allow the wreath to cool down well before serving, and always check the temperature of the filling before your child takes a bite.
Variations and Tips
Many families enjoy modifying the pizza wreath to fit their own tastes. You can easily replace the salami with finely diced bell peppers, sweet corn, zucchini, or mild mushrooms. This creates a delicious vegetarian version in no time, bringing extra vegetables to the menu. A bit of grated Gouda or mild cheddar also works wonderfully as an alternative to mozzarella.
For a softer texture for younger children, let the wreath rest briefly under a clean kitchen towel right after baking. The trapped steam makes the crust a bit gentler and easier to chew. Parents can spice up their own portions directly on the plate with some chili flakes, fresh arugula, or a drizzle of garlic oil.
The baked pizza wreath keeps well in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days. It also freezes beautifully. Cut it into handy slices before freezing, and store them in individual portions. When needed, you can simply warm the slices up in the toaster or oven for a quick and satisfying snack.
Allergy and Safety Information
This recipe contains gluten (wheat or spelt) and dairy (mozzarella). Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
Make sure to dice the salami very finely, as larger or tough pieces can be difficult for small children to chew and pose a choking risk. If you have any concerns about introducing new foods or toddler nutrition, talk to your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Thanks to the mozzarella, this pizza wreath provides valuable calcium, which supports healthy bone growth. The yeast dough offers complex carbohydrates that keep little ones full and satisfied, providing them with steady energy for their adventures. The tomato sauce adds a mild, fruity note along with extra nutrients. A side of fresh raw vegetables, like cucumber sticks, mild cherry tomatoes, or a small side salad, rounds off the meal perfectly and adds extra vitamins and fiber.
